Word2Box: Learning Word Representation Using Box Embeddings

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Learning vector representations for words is one of the most fundamental topics in NLP, capable of capturing syntactic and semantic relationships useful in a variety of downstream NLP tasks. Vector representations can be limiting, however, in that typical scoring such as dot product similarity intertwines position and magnitude of the vector in space. Exciting innovations in the space of representation learning have proposed alternative fundamental representations, such as distributions, hyperbolic vectors, or regions. Our model, Word2Box, takes a region-based approach to the problem of word representation, representing words as $n$-dimensional rectangles. These representations encode position and breadth independently and provide additional geometric operations such as intersection and containment which allow them to model co-occurrence patterns vectors struggle with. We demonstrate improved performance on various word similarity tasks, particularly on less common words, and perform a qualitative analysis exploring the additional unique expressivity provided by Word2Box.

Learning Word Representations from Relational Graphs

AAAI Conferences

Attributes of words and relations between two words are central to numerous tasks in Artificial Intelligence such as knowledge representation, similarity measurement, and analogy detection. Often when two words share one or more attributes in common, they are con- nected by some semantic relations. On the other hand, if there are numerous semantic relations between two words, we can expect some of the attributes of one of the words to be inherited by the other. Motivated by this close connection between attributes and relations, given a relational graph in which words are inter-connected via numerous semantic relations, we propose a method to learn a latent representation for the individual words. The proposed method considers not only the co-occurrences of words as done by existing approaches for word representation learning, but also the semantic relations in which two words co-occur. To evaluate the accuracy of the word representations learnt using the proposed method, we use the learnt word representa- tions to solve semantic word analogy problems. Our experimental results show that it is possible to learn better word representations by using semantic semantics between words.

Learning Word Representations with Hierarchical Sparse Coding

arXiv.org Machine Learning

We propose a new method for learning word representations using hierarchical regularization in sparse coding inspired by the linguistic study of word meanings. We show an efficient learning algorithm based on stochastic proximal methods that is significantly faster than previous approaches, making it possible to perform hierarchical sparse coding on a corpus of billions of word tokens. Experiments on various benchmark tasks--word similarity ranking, analogies, sentence completion, and sentiment analysis--demonstrate that the method outperforms or is competitive with state-of-the-art methods.
