Session-Level Spoken Language Assessment with a Multimodal Foundation Model via Multi-Target Learning

Spoken Language Assessment (SLA) estimates a learner's oral proficiency from spontaneous speech. The growing population of L2 English speakers has intensified the demand for reliable SLA, a critical component of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL). Existing efforts often rely on cascaded pipelines, which are prone to error propagation, or end-to-end models that often operate on a short audio window, which might miss discourse-level evidence. This paper introduces a novel multimodal foundation model approach that performs session-level evaluation in a single pass. Our approach couples multi-target learning with a frozen, Whisper ASR model-based speech prior for acoustic-aware calibration, allowing for jointly learning holistic and trait-level objectives of SLA without resorting to handcrafted features. By coherently processing the entire response session of an L2 speaker, the model excels at predicting holistic oral proficiency. Experiments conducted on the Speak & Improve benchmark demonstrate that our proposed approach outperforms the previous state-of-the-art cascaded system and exhibits robust cross-part generalization, producing a compact deployable grader that is tailored for CALL applications.
The NTNU System at the S&I Challenge 2025 SLA Open Track

A recent line of research on spoken language assessment (SLA) employs neural models such as BERT and wav2vec 2.0 (W2V) to evaluate speaking proficiency across linguistic and acoustic modalities. Although both models effectively capture features relevant to oral competence, each exhibits modality-specific limitations. BERT-based methods rely on ASR transcripts, which often fail to capture prosodic and phonetic cues for SLA. In contrast, W2V-based methods excel at modeling acoustic features but lack semantic interpretability. To overcome these limitations, we propose a system that integrates W2V with Phi-4 multimodal large language model (MLLM) through a score fusion strategy. The proposed system achieves a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.375 on the official test set of the Speak & Improve Challenge 2025, securing second place in the competition. For comparison, the RMSEs of the top-ranked, third-ranked, and official baseline systems are 0.364, 0.384, and 0.444, respectively.
Speak & Improve Challenge 2025: Tasks and Baseline Systems

This paper presents the "Speak & Improve Challenge 2025: Spoken Language Assessment and Feedback" -- a challenge associated with the ISCA SLaTE 2025 Workshop. The goal of the challenge is to advance research on spoken language assessment and feedback, with tasks associated with both the underlying technology and language learning feedback. Linked with the challenge, the Speak & Improve (S&I) Corpus 2025 is being pre-released, a dataset of L2 learner English data with holistic scores and language error annotation, collected from open (spontaneous) speaking tests on the Speak & Improve learning platform. The corpus consists of approximately 315 hours of audio data from second language English learners with holistic scores, and a 55-hour subset with manual transcriptions and error labels. The Challenge has four shared tasks: Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), Spoken Language Assessment (SLA), Spoken Grammatical Error Correction (SGEC), and Spoken Grammatical Error Correction Feedback (SGECF). Each of these tasks has a closed track where a predetermined set of models and data sources are allowed to be used, and an open track where any public resource may be used. Challenge participants may do one or more of the tasks. This paper describes the challenge, the S&I Corpus 2025, and the baseline systems released for the Challenge.
Speak & Improve Corpus 2025: an L2 English Speech Corpus for Language Assessment and Feedback

We introduce the Speak & Improve Corpus 2025, a dataset of L2 learner English data with holistic scores and language error annotation, collected from open (spontaneous) speaking tests on the Speak & Improve learning platform. The aim of the corpus release is to address a major challenge to developing L2 spoken language processing systems, the lack of publicly available data with high-quality annotations. It is being made available for non-commercial use on the ELiT website. In designing this corpus we have sought to make it cover a wide-range of speaker attributes, from their L1 to their speaking ability, as well as providing manual annotations. This enables a range of language-learning tasks to be examined, such as assessing speaking proficiency or providing feedback on grammatical errors in a learner's speech. Additionally the data supports research into the underlying technology required for these tasks including automatic speech recognition (ASR) of low resource L2 learner English, disfluency detection or spoken grammatical error correction (GEC). The corpus consists of around 315 hours of L2 English learners audio with holistic scores, and a subset of audio annotated with transcriptions and error labels.

Accessibility of research data is critical for advances in many research fields, but textual data often cannot be shared due to the personal and sensitive information which it contains, e.g names or political opinions. General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) suggests pseudonymization as a solution to secure open access to research data, but we need to learn more about pseudonymization as an approach before adopting it for manipulation of research data. This paper outlines a research agenda within pseudonymization, namely need of studies into the effects of pseudonymization on unstructured data in relation to e.g. readability and language assessment, as well as the effectiveness of pseudonymization as a way of protecting writer identity, while also exploring different ways of developing context-sensitive algorithms for detection, labelling and replacement of personal information in unstructured data. The recently granted project on pseudonymization Grandma Karl is 27 years old addresses exactly those challenges.
