Apple has combined its various artificial intelligence divisions into a new structure led by recent hire John Giannandrea, formerly Google's head of search and AI. TechCrunch first reported the restructuring earlier today, and Apple confirmed the change with an update to its executive leadership page. Giannandrea will now be in charge of Apple's machine learning division, its Siri team, and the Core ML team. Core ML is the machine learning API Apple launched last year to help native AI tasks and AI-focused apps and services from third-party developers run more efficiently on iOS devices. Giannandrea's official title will be chief of machine learning and AI strategy, and it's clear Apple leadership is putting its faith in the executive to help beef up its AI efforts.

Elon Musk facing growing chorus of critics on 'evil' artificial intelligence

File photo: Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk smiles as he attends a forum on startups in Hong Kong, China January 26, 2016. Despite Elon Musk's continued warnings, evil machines won't take over the world, two experts said this week. Artificial intelligence (AI) could be destined to turn against humanity, Musk has argued. The tech exec, who in addition to running high-profile companies such as Tesla and SpaceX, is a co-founder of OpenAI, a non-profit AI research company "discovering and enacting the path to safe artificial general intelligence." However, other executives in Silicon Valley have taken issue with Musk's comments, including the leader of Google's artificial intelligence efforts. "I'm definitely not worried about the AI apocalypse," said Google's John Giannandrea, when speaking at TechCrunch Disrupt SF. "I just object to the hype and soundbites that some people are making," he added.

John Giannandreas Head of Google Search Machine Learning

We can all agree that being with a Google that long and contributing so much to search is a remarkable accomplishment and congratulate Singhal as he steps into a new time in life, focusing on philanthropy. As new leadership often means momentous refocusing, SEO professionals wonder how earned search may change as Giannandreas assumes this position, and if the change will generate ripples across the tech world as a whole. The future of how GoogleBot crawls and interprets web content looks promising under his leadership, as we observe how he impacts machine learning's future and how the Metaweb is woven. Amit went on to say that "search is stronger than ever, and will only get better in the hands of an outstanding set of senior leaders who are already running the show day-to-day. Our mission of empowering people with information and the impact it has had on this world cannot be overstated." John Giannandrea, who has been the forerunner overseeing artificial intelligence, such as in Google Algorithm RankBrain, has been employed at Google for six years and is currently the VP of engineering. As explained by Forbes in November, 2015 RankBrain's role took "a very large fraction" of the millions of queries that went through the search engine.

Deep Learning - The End of SEO as We Know It

#artificialintelligence

The latest news about Google's head of search, Amit Singhal, to leave the company he spent 15 years with, had the shocking effect on the SEO community. And what is more surprising - his successor, John Giannandrea, is the one who has worked on artificial intelligence at Google (including RankBrain - the part of search algorithm which uses AI to work with a queries search engine was not able to understand before). With this change of executives, we may be on the verge of a new era - the era of transition from the algorithm-based search to AI-based search. To power its artificial intelligence, Google uses deep learning (also known as neural networks) - one of machine learning methods, which uses a mathematical model to mimic the way as human brain neurons work. Deep learning is built on the concept of digital neurons, organized into layers.
