US imposes new sanctions on Iran after attack on Israel

Al Jazeera

The administration of United States President Joe Biden has imposed new sanctions on Iran in response to its missile and drone attack on Israel, as tensions mount over the possibility of further escalation in the Middle East. In a statement on Thursday, Biden said the sanctions targeted "leaders and entities connected to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Iran's Defense Ministry, and the Iranian government's missile and drone program that enabled" the April 13 attack on Israel. "As I discussed with my fellow G7 [Group of Seven] leaders the morning after the attack, we are committed to acting collectively to increase economic pressure on Iran," the US president said. "And our allies and partners have or will issue additional sanctions and measures to restrict Iran's destabilizing military programs." Iran launched hundreds of missiles and drones at Israel in the early hours on Sunday, in retaliation for the deadly bombing of the Iranian consulate in Syria's capital, Damascus, earlier this month.

Ukraine official points to Israel's response to Iranian attack as blueprint for Kyiv's defense needs

Video captures the moment and aftermath of what appears to be a drone, allegedly of Ukrainian origin, striking Russian drone production facility. Russian officials claimed that only a worker's dormitory was hit. The success of Israel and its allies in largely thwarting a massive Iranian missile and drone attack shows what Ukraine could achieve against Russian aerial barrages if it had more support from its partners, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said Monday. A recent Russian aerial campaign targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure and other targets has wrought extensive damage, and Ukrainian officials have pleaded with the country's Western allies to provide more air defense systems as the war stretches into its third year. Israel's defense system, with assistance from the U.S. and Britain -- countries that are also supporting Ukraine's war effort -- is credited with preventing serious damage or casualties in Sunday's attack by Iran using more than 300 drones and missiles. Kuleba, speaking to reporters in Kyiv, urged Ukraine's allies to "give us what we need and we will do the rest of the job."

Despite Iranian attack killing American abroad, Biden pursues nuclear deal with ayatollah's regime

FOX News

National security analyst Dr. Rebecca Grant joins "Fox News Live" to weigh in on what steps President Biden can take to rein in Iranian-backed militia strikes on U.S. bases in Syria. The Iranian regime's recent drone attack on an American base in Syria, which resulted in the murder of a U.S. contractor, has not deterred the Biden administration from pursuing the controversial nuclear pact with Tehran that would dramatically enrich the coffers of the Islamic Republic. The White House remains wedded to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) – the formal name for the Iran nuclear deal – that "would allow Tehran to access up to $275 billion in financial benefits during its first year in effect and $1 trillion by 2030." Veteran Iran experts have argued that the JCPOA is no longer tenable because it is riddled with serious defects about deterring Iran's malign behavior, including failing to stop Tehran's ongoing drone attacks against Americans. Iran's regime was caught enriching uranium to 84% purity in February – just 6% short of weapons-grade uranium for a nuclear weapon.

Iranian attacks in the waterways of the Middle East and elsewhere in the region "have the attention of everyone" as tensions rise over Tehran's advancing nuclear program, the head of the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet said Tuesday. Vice Adm. Brad Cooper also told The Associated Press that he's seen a rise in what he described as Iran's "malign activities" in the region over his two years leading the Bahrain-based 5th Fleet. While Cooper pointed to recent seizures of weapons by American and allied forces in the region as a success, he acknowledged that Iran has been able to carry out drone attacks targeting shipping in the Mideast and other assaults in the region.

Nine dead in Iranian attacks on Kurdish rebels in northern Iraq

Al Jazeera

Iran has attacked an Iranian-Kurdish opposition group in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq, killing nine people and injuring several others, Kurdish officials said. The missile and drone attacks on Wednesday focused on bases in Koya, some 60km (35 miles) east of Erbil, said Soran Nuri – a member of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan. The group, known by the acronym KDPI, is a left-wing armed opposition force that is banned in Iran. Iran's state-run IRNA news agency and broadcaster said Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps ground forces targeted some bases of a separatist group in the north of Iraq with "precision missiles" and a "suicide drone". "This operation will continue with our full determination until the threat is effectively repelled, terrorist groups' bases are dismantled, and the authorities of the Kurdish region assume their obligations and responsibilities," the IRGC said in a statement read on state television. Nine people were killed and 24 wounded, according to Kurdistan Regional Government's health minister, Saman Barazanchi.
