An Interactive Framework for Finding the Optimal Trade-off in Differential Privacy

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Differential privacy (DP) is the standard for privacy-preserving analysis, and introduces a fundamental trade-off between privacy guarantees and model performance. Selecting the optimal balance is a critical challenge that can be framed as a multi-objective optimization (MOO) problem where one first discovers the set of optimal trade-offs (the Pareto front) and then learns a decision-maker's preference over them. While a rich body of work on interactive MOO exists, the standard approach -- modeling the objective functions with generic surrogates and learning preferences from simple pairwise feedback -- is inefficient for DP because it fails to leverage the problem's unique structure: a point on the Pareto front can be generated directly by maximizing accuracy for a fixed privacy level. Motivated by this property, we first derive the shape of the trade-off theoretically, which allows us to model the Pareto front directly and efficiently. To address inefficiency in preference learning, we replace pairwise comparisons with a more informative interaction. In particular, we present the user with hypothetical trade-off curves and ask them to pick their preferred trade-off. Our experiments on differentially private logistic regression and deep transfer learning across six real-world datasets show that our method converges to the optimal privacy-accuracy trade-off with significantly less computational cost and user interaction than baselines.

Privacy-Preserving Encrypted Low-Dose CT Denoising

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Deep learning (DL) has made significant advancements in tomographic imaging, particularly in low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) denoising. A recent trend involves servers training powerful models with large amounts of self-collected private data and providing application programming interfaces (APIs) for users, such as Chat-GPT. To avoid model leakage, users are required to upload their data to the server model, but this way raises public concerns about the potential risk of privacy disclosure, especially for medical data. Hence, to alleviate related concerns, in this paper, we propose to directly denoise LDCT in the encrypted domain to achieve privacy-preserving cloud services without exposing private data to the server. To this end, we employ homomorphic encryption to encrypt private LDCT data, which is then transferred to the server model trained with plaintext LDCT for further denoising. However, since traditional operations, such as convolution and linear transformation, in DL methods cannot be directly used in the encrypted domain, we transform the fundamental mathematic operations in the plaintext domain into the operations in the encrypted domain. In addition, we present two interactive frameworks for linear and nonlinear models in this paper, both of which can achieve lossless operating. In this way, the proposed methods can achieve two merits, the data privacy is well protected and the server model is free from the risk of model leakage. Moreover, we provide theoretical proof to validate the lossless property of our framework. Finally, experiments were conducted to demonstrate that the transferred contents are well protected and cannot be reconstructed. The code will be released once the paper is accepted.

An Interactive Framework for Profiling News Media Sources

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

The recent rise of social media has led to the spread of large amounts of fake and biased news, content published with the intent to sway beliefs. While detecting and profiling the sources that spread this news is important to maintain a healthy society, it is challenging for automated systems. In this paper, we propose an interactive framework for news media profiling. It combines the strengths of graph based news media profiling models, Pre-trained Large Language Models, and human insight to characterize the social context on social media. Experimental results show that with as little as 5 human interactions, our framework can rapidly detect fake and biased news media, even in the most challenging settings of emerging news events, where test data is unseen.

ChemGymRL: An Interactive Framework for Reinforcement Learning for Digital Chemistry

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

This paper provides a simulated laboratory for making use of Reinforcement Learning (RL) for chemical discovery. Since RL is fairly data intensive, training agents `on-the-fly' by taking actions in the real world is infeasible and possibly dangerous. Moreover, chemical processing and discovery involves challenges which are not commonly found in RL benchmarks and therefore offer a rich space to work in. We introduce a set of highly customizable and open-source RL environments, ChemGymRL, based on the standard Open AI Gym template. ChemGymRL supports a series of interconnected virtual chemical benches where RL agents can operate and train. The paper introduces and details each of these benches using well-known chemical reactions as illustrative examples, and trains a set of standard RL algorithms in each of these benches. Finally, discussion and comparison of the performances of several standard RL methods are provided in addition to a list of directions for future work as a vision for the further development and usage of ChemGymRL.

A Visual Semantic Framework for Innovation Analytics

AAAI Conferences

In this demo we present a semantic framework for innovation and patent analytics powered by Mined Semantic Analysis (MSA). Our framework provides cognitive assistance to its users through a Web-based visual and interactive interface. First, we describe building a conceptual knowledge graph by mining user-generated encyclopedic textual corpus for semantic associations. Then, we demonstrate applying the acquired knowledge to support many cognition and knowledge based use cases for innovation analysis including technology exploration and landscaping, competitive analysis, literature and prior art search and others.
