The Twenty-First International Conference on Intelligent Environments (IE 2025): A Report
Intelligent Environments are populated with numerous devices and have multiple occupants. They inherently exhibit increasingly intelligent behavior, support consistent functionality and human-centric operation (humans, as opposed to mere users, have increased requirements from a system, including, for example, intuitive interaction, protection of privacy, fault-tolerance, etc.), and provide optimized resource usage. The development of Intelligent Environments is considered the first and primary step towards the realization of the Ambient Intelligence vision and requires input from research and contributions from several scientific and engineering disciplines, including computer science, software engineering, artificial intelligence, architecture, social sciences, art and design. The series of IE conferences has been consistently creating a unique blend of researchers in these disciplines, fostering cross-disciplinary discussions, debate and collaborations. The 21st International Conference on Intelligent Environments was held on June 23–26, 2025, in Darmstadt (Germany).

Applying Machine Learning to Discourse Processing
The topics of the eight symposia were (1) Applying Machine Learning to Discourse Processing, (2) Integrating Robotic Research: Taking the Next Leap, (3) Intelligent Environments, (4) Intelligent Text Summarization, (5) Interactive and Mixed-Initiative Decision-Theoretic Systems, (6) Multimodal Reasoning, (7) Prospects for a Common-Sense Theory of Causation, and (8) Satisficing Models. In addition, two tutorials provided an overview of various machine-learning techniques and how some have been applied to other areas of NLP. During the discussion and panel sessions, a number of open problems were raised. There was much discussion on the availability of annotated corpora in the public domain to facilitate the application of supervised machine-learning techniques and allow the comparison of results obtained using different learning approaches. The American Association for Artificial Intelligence, in cooperation with Stanford University's Department of Computer Science, held the 1998 Spring Symposium Series on 23 to 25 March at Stanford University.
The Fourth International Conference on Intelligent Environments (IE08): A Report
The Fourth IET International Conference on Intelligent Environments was held July 21-22 at the University of Washington campus in Seattle, Washington. The general chairs were Diane Cook of Washington State University and Sumi Helal of the University of Florida. Hani Hagras and Vic Callaghan of the University of Essex served as program chairs. This article presents a report of the conference. Today's computer processors and displays will also support tele-immersive environments. Handling and transporting all that time-sensitive data, however, is still a stretch for ordinary desktop operating systems and the Internet. Researchers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the University of California at Berkeley have developed software, dubbed Tele-immersive Environments for EVErybody (TEEVE), that aims to bridge this gap. The system captures and coordinates video streams from three or more sets of four cameras, each of which generates a stream of three-dimensional video data. The system generates macro video frames made up of the frames from all of the cameras at one time interval, and sends them over a network in a way that evenly distributes the data so that it does not overload the network.
