Paralympian Elizabeth Marks headed to second Games, far exceeding initial goal to be just 'fit for duty'

FOX News

Fox News Flash top headlines are here. Check out what's clicking on Foxnews.com. Elizabeth Marks just wanted to prove she was fit for duty. She started swimming as a way to get back in shape and qualify for active duty again when a friend suggested she compete in the Warrior Games, a sport event for wounded, injured or ill service members and veterans. "I was just trying to be found fit for duty, and I couldn't run, so I took up swimming as a second form of cardio, and there was a gentleman there who encouraged me to try out for Warrior Games," Marks told Fox News.

Who Is Elon Musk's New Brain-Computer Interface For?

Slate

On Friday, Elon Musk's company Neuralink introduced the world to three pigs who seemed indistinguishable. Yet Gertrude, who was both shy and stubborn, had a secret: Two months prior, her brain had been implanted with Neuralink's newest version of a brain-computer interface, or BCI. She looked just like another pig with no such device and a third who had had a similar device in and then removed. As Gertrude walked around doing pig things, viewers saw a display of her real-time brain activity. "If the device is lasting in the pig, as it lasted in there for two months and going strong, then that's a good sign the device is robust for people," Musk said.

'Terrain Of Magical Expertise' Kickstarter Funded In 48 Hours; Stretch Goals Revealed

International Business Times

The "Terrain of Magical Expertise" RPG is now a sure thing after its Kickstarter project reached its initial goal of $75,000 in just a span of 48 hours. Project co-lead Chris Niosi has also revealed the two stretch goals for the campaign. Last Sunday, Niosi and his team launched the Kickstarter campaign for their 2D turn-based RPG that's based on a hit webseries of the same name. Just two days later, the team was surprised to know that support from backers already exceeded the $75,000 initial goal. The campaign still has 31 days remaining before it ends, so it's very likely that more backers would contribute to the total pledge amount for the game.

Musk's Latest Startup Eyes Brain-Computer Links

#artificialintelligence

Elon Musk, the auto and space entrepreneur and severe critic of artificial intelligence, is forming a new venture that reportedly will seek to develop an interface between the human brain and computers. The initial goal is aiding the disabled, but the visionary inventor reportedly views the AI startup as a way of forging non-verbal forms of communication while at the same time promoting ethical AI research. Details of the new venture are sketchy, but according to several reports this week the new venture called Neuralink Corp. would assist researchers in keeping up with steady advancements in machine intelligence. Details of the AI interface startup were first reported by the Wall Street Journal. Neuralink's proposed interface reportedly involves implanting "tiny electrodes in human brains."

Learning from Demonstration for Goal-Driven Autonomy

AAAI Conferences

Goal-driven autonomy (GDA) is a conceptual model for creating an autonomous agent that monitors a set of expectations during plan execution, detects when discrepancies occur, builds explanations for the cause of failures, and formulates new goals to pursue when planning failures arise. While this framework enables the development of agents that can operate in complex and dynamic environments, implementing the logic for each of the subtasks in the model requires substantial domain engineering. We present a method using case-based reasoning and intent recognition in order to build GDA agents that learn from demonstrations. Our approach reduces the amount of domain engineering necessary to implement GDA agents and learns expectations, explanations, and goals from expert demonstrations. We have applied this approach to build an agent for the real-time strategy game StarCraft. Our results show that integrating the GDA conceptual model into the agent greatly improves its win rate.
