The Cure

WIRED

Erotic imagery and curiosity often arise in intimate relationships, especially when there's safety, play, and mutual recognition. It doesn't mean you've done anything "wrong." On the contrary, it shows that your imagination is alive and searching for ways to bridge the gap between closeness and distance, fantasy and reality. You offer me something charged, even a bit embarrassing, and you're watching--will I crumble?

AI helps robots manipulate objects with their whole bodies

AIHub

MIT researchers developed an AI technique that enables a robot to develop complex plans for manipulating an object using its entire hand, not just the fingertips. This model can generate effective plans in about a minute using a standard laptop. Here, a robot attempts to rotate a bucket 180 degrees. Imagine you want to carry a large, heavy box up a flight of stairs. You might spread your fingers out and lift that box with both hands, then hold it on top of your forearms and balance it against your chest, using your whole body to manipulate the box.

Visual Analytics For Machine Learning: A Data Perspective Survey

Wang, Junpeng, Liu, Shixia, Zhang, Wei

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

The past decade has witnessed a plethora of works that leverage the power of visualization (VIS) to interpret machine learning (ML) models. The corresponding research topic, VIS4ML, keeps growing at a fast pace. To better organize the enormous works and shed light on the developing trend of VIS4ML, we provide a systematic review of these works through this survey. Since data quality greatly impacts the performance of ML models, our survey focuses specifically on summarizing VIS4ML works from the data perspective. First, we categorize the common data handled by ML models into five types, explain the unique features of each type, and highlight the corresponding ML models that are good at learning from them. Second, from the large number of VIS4ML works, we tease out six tasks that operate on these types of data (i.e., data-centric tasks) at different stages of the ML pipeline to understand, diagnose, and refine ML models. Lastly, by studying the distribution of 143 surveyed papers across the five data types, six data-centric tasks, and their intersections, we analyze the prospective research directions and envision future research trends.

Microelectronics give researchers a remote control for biological robots

Robohub

A photograph of an eBiobot prototype, lit with blue microLEDs. Remotely controlled miniature biological robots have many potential applications in medicine, sensing and environmental monitoring. Then, they saw the light. Now, miniature biological robots have gained a new trick: remote control. The hybrid "eBiobots" are the first to combine soft materials, living muscle and microelectronics, said researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Northwestern University and collaborating institutions.

MIT AI Image Generator System Makes Models Like DALL-E 2 More Creative

#artificialintelligence

A sample DALL·E 2 generated image of "an astronaut riding a horse in a photorealistic style." A new method developed by researchers uses multiple models to create more complex images with better understanding. With the introduction of DALL-E, the internet had a collective feel-good moment. This artificial intelligence-based image generator is inspired by artist Salvador Dali and the lovable robot WALL-E and uses natural language to produce whatever mysterious and beautiful image your heart desires. Seeing typed-out inputs such as "smiling gopher holding an ice cream cone" instantly spring to life is a vivid AI-generated image clearly resonated with the world.

Big data as a tool for detecting (and punishing?) bullies

AITopics Original Links

We already know how powerful techniques such as machine learning and sentiment analyis can be when it comes to deciphering consumer behavior online, and now it seems they can identify bullies, as well. A group of University of Wisconsin researchers have developed a machine learning algorithm that's identifying more than 15,000 tweets per day relating to bullying -- complete with loads of associated sociological insights -- which begs the question of how to act on that data. How do you govern a social web that can be simultaneously a communication platform, a research lab full of unknowing subjects and a boiling-over pot of criminal evidence? In order to train their model, the researchers fed it two sets of tweets -- one they had determined to be about bullying activity and another that was not. Once the model had learned the language identifiers of tweets relating to bullying, it was time to turn it loose on real-world tweets.

New AI system predicts building energy rates in less than a second

#artificialintelligence

Computer scientists at Loughborough University have teamed up with multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy, Cundall, to create an artificial intelligence system that can predict building emissions rates (BER) – an important value used to calculate building energy performance – of non-domestic buildings. Current methods can take hours to days to produce BERs and are generated by manually inputting hundreds of variables. Dr Georgina Cosma and postgraduate student Kareem Ahmed, of the School of Science, have designed and trained an AI model to predict BER values with 27 inputs with little loss in accuracy. Better yet, the proposed AI model – which was created with the support of Cundall's Head of Research and Innovation, Edwin Wealend, and trained using large-scale data obtained from UK government energy performance assessments – can generate a BER value almost instantly. Dr Cosma says the research "is an important first step towards the use of machine learning tools for energy prediction in the UK" and it shows how data can "improve current processes in the construction industry".

AI DBT Impact on Mammography Post-breast Therapy

#artificialintelligence

AI-CAD marked axillary lymph node and region in right upper outer quadrant (arrows and thin line outlining both sites) and assigned an abnormality score of 28%. August 11, 2021 -- According to an open-access Editor's Choice article in the American Journal of Roentgenology (AJR), artificial intelligence-based computer-aided detection (AI-CAD) can be a practical addition for lowering false-positive findings when performing post-breast conserving therapy (BCT) surveillance mammography. "After BCT, adjunct digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) or AI-CAD reduced recall rates and improved accuracy in the ipsilateral and contralateral breasts compared with digital mammography (DM)," wrote lead investigator Jung Hyun Yoon. "In the ipsilateral breast, addition of AI-CAD resulted in lower recall rate and higher accuracy than addition of DBT." Yoon and colleagues' single-center retrospective study included 314 women (mean age, 53.2 years; 4 with bilateral breast cancer) who underwent BCT followed by DBT (mean interval from surgery to DBT, 15.2 months). Three breast radiologists independently reviewed images in three sessions: DM, DM with DBT, and DM with AI-CAD.

A Hybrid AI Approach to Optimizing Oil Field Planning

#artificialintelligence

What's the best way to arrange wells in an oil or gas field? It's a simple enough question, but the answer can be very complex. Now a Cal Tech/JPL spinoff is developing a new approach that blends traditional HPC simulation with deep reinforcement learning running on GPUs to optimize energy extraction. The well placement game is a familiar one to oil and gas companies. For years, they have been using simulators running atop HPC systems to model underground reservoirs.
