Here's the Google Assistant feature I miss You'll need to pay up to get this key Google Assistant feature back. I recently made the switch to Gemini on my Google smart speakers and displays, and for the most part, I'm liking it. Gemini is chatty without being a blabbermouth, and it capably controls my smart home while also delivering detailed weather reports and answers to my other queries.

Google just rebranded its Nest Aware subscription service
When you purchase through links in our articles, we may earn a small commission. Say goodbye to Nest Aware, and hello to Google Home Premium. Lots of change is coming to Google Home in the coming weeks, from the replacement of Google Assistant with Gemini for Home to an overhaul of its smart home subscription service, complete with a new name. Google is rebranding its Nest Aware plans as Google Home Premium, adding a bevy of Gemini-powered features to the service's two tiers (Standard and Advanced), but it's not chaning the prices for those tiers. So yes, the Google Home Premium reboot doesn't include any price hikes, but that shouldn't come as a surprise, given that Google just boosted the price of its former Nest Aware tiers back in July--perhaps in anticipation of the coming changes.
Gemini is coming to Google's smart speakers and displays this fall
We already knew that Google Assistant was soon to be replaced by a "new experience powered by Gemini." Now we know what that new experience will be called, and when it's arriving. Gemini for Home is the name of the new Gemini-powered voice assistant for Google smart speakers and displays, including the current Nest Audio, Nest Mini, Nest Hub, and Nest Hub Max. "Early access" to Gemini for Home kicks off in October, Google announced in a blog post Wednesday, with both free and paid versions available. Google didn't say how much the paid version of Gemini for Home will cost.
Asking a Google speaker to play Amazon Music tunes just got easier
It's long been possible to say "Hey Google" to your Google smart speaker to request a playlist from, say, YouTube Music, Spotify, Pandora, and even Apple Music. But can you spot the major music service that's missing? Until now, Amazon Music had been conspicuously absent from the list of music streamers that Google Assistant could easily control on your Google Nest smart speaker or display. Recently, though, Google has begun changing its tune in regard to Amazon Music support on its Nest devices. As spotted by 9to5Google, Amazon Music can finally be set as a default music service on your Google smart speakers.

Gemini AI smarts are coming to Google Home to make the Assistant a better conversationalist
During CES 2025, I had a chance to check out a demo of the way Google is integrating Gemini capabilities into its smart home platform via devices like the Nest Audio, Nest Hub and Nest Cameras. The main takeaway is that the conversations you have with the Google Assistant will feel more natural. Personally, I'd appreciate being able to ask questions as they pop in my head, without having to formulate some Assistant-friendly sentence before speaking -- what I saw makes me feel like my wish could come true. To kick things off, you'll still say "Hey Google," but for follow-up questions you can skip the prompt and the Assistant will be able to hold on to the thread of your conversation. During the demonstration, held in a simulated (and very posh) kitchen, the Google representative asked things like what to cook with ingredients he had on hand (chicken and spinach).
Google Gemini on your Nest speaker: How to give it a try
Both Amazon and Apple are playing it safe when it comes to allowing generative AI on their respective smart speakers. On the other hand, you can already chat with Google's Gemini AI on a Nest device, and Google has now detailed how you can get in on the test. The whole "there's Gemini in my Nest!" hubbub began earlier this month, when some Nest speaker users began noticing that Google Assistant was speaking in two different voices: the standard Assistant voice, and a deeper, more loquacious voice that most suspected was powered by Gemini. Google has now confirmed that it's testing Gemini on certain Nest devices, and (as spotted by 9to5Google), it's even published a support page detailing how you, too, can give Gemini a spin on your Nest speaker. Here's what you'll need to do: Now it's time to give Gemini on your Nest speakers a whirl.
Google smart speakers are starting to sound like Gemini
A smattering of Google Home users are reporting that their Nest speakers are--when asked the right voice command--chatting with a new voice, a sign that the promised Gemini makeover for Google Assistant is starting to roll out. In a video posted on Reddit, a Google Nest Mini user asked "Hey Google, what's up," and got an unusually loquacious reply in a new voice: "What's happening right now is that we're on a giant rock moving through space at 1,000 miles an hour and orbiting a giant star made up mostly of hydrogen. Also, we're chatting, which I enjoy." When the Nest user asked a more basic follow-up question about the weather, Google Assistant answered in its regular voice with a typical weather report. According to 9to5Google, you can tell if the Gemini-enhanced Assistant has made its way to your Nest speakers by asking, "Hey Google, what's up?"
Say what! These genius voice commands will change your life on your iPhone or Android
Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant are powerful - but the sad reality is most people aren't maximizing their true potential. So, let's delve into the top voice commands for your smart assistant that can simplify your daily life: With those details settled, let's delve into the top voice commands for your smart assistant that can simplify your daily life (stock image) Before we get started, to make your phone's virtual assistant work better, be sure it truly understands your voice, tone and inflections. Google makes its AI assistant more accessible with 'Look and Talk'
Google Assistant is already pretty handy, filling in your payment info on take out orders, helping get the kids to school on time, controlling your stereo systems' volume and your home's smart light schedules. At its I/O 2022 keynote today, company executives showed off some of the new features arriving soon for the AI. The first of these is "Look and Talk." Instead of having to repeatedly start your requests to Assistant with "Hey Google," this new feature relies on computer vision and voice matching to constantly pay attention to the user. As Sissie Hsiao, Google's VP of Assistant, explained on stage, all the user has to do is look at their Nest Hub Max and state their request.
