FAA places restrictions on drone company after Florida boy injured at holiday airshow, underwent heart surgery
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has suspended certain operations by a Texas-based drone company after a Florida boy was injured during a holiday airshow last week and had to undergo heart surgery. The FAA confirmed to Fox News Digital that it suspended the Part 107 Waiver for Sky Elements Drones. The waiver allows drone operators to fly at night, fly over people, and operate drones outside the line of sight. Thus, with this waiver suspended, Sky Elements Drones legally cannot perform its shows. It's not clear how long the pause will remain in place.

Recent advancements in technology, particularly in machine learning (ML), deep learning (DL), and the metaverse, offer great potential for revolutionizing surgical science. The combination of artificial intelligence and extended reality (AI-XR) technologies has the potential to create a surgical metaverse, a virtual environment where surgeries can be planned and performed. This paper aims to provide insight into the various potential applications of an AI-XR surgical metaverse and the challenges that must be addressed to bring its full potential to fruition. It is important for the community to focus on these challenges to fully realize the potential of the AI-XR surgical metaverses. Furthermore, to emphasize the need for secure and robust AI-XR surgical metaverses and to demonstrate the real-world implications of security threats to the AI-XR surgical metaverses, we present a case study in which the ``an immersive surgical attack'' on incision point localization is performed in the context of preoperative planning in a surgical metaverse.

New risk calculator could lead to more successful heart operations
Patients could receive a greater benefit from open heart surgery thanks to a new computer model aimed at helping surgeons to better calculate risk and decide whether it's safe to operate. This project, jointly funded by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) and The Alan Turing Institute, will develop a new platform using machine learning to identify patients who are most likely to have a successful operation. Over 30,000 adult patients are considered for heart surgery every year in the UK, and risk prediction plays a major role in the decision-making process made by doctors and patients. Assessing risk before open heart surgery is crucial due to the potential complications that can arise during and after the operation. To calculate a patient's risk before surgery, heart surgeons currently use models such as the EuroSCORE – but this may overestimate the actual risk, partly due to improvements in patient management since the model was developed.
