AI is reshaping the way we buy, sell and value homes

#artificialintelligence

The housing market continues to defy gravity. Sales of existing homes rose more than 10% last month compared to a year ago, hitting their highest level since December 2006, according to the National Association of Realtors. And now, more than ever, people are relying on online platforms to search for -- and even buy -- houses. And that opens the door for artificial intelligence to play a bigger role, like using computer vision to create real estate listings based on photos. I spoke with Christopher Geczy, a professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania who teaches about real estate and insurance technology.

Amazon Alexa 'heard and sent private chat'

A couple in Portland, Oregon joked that their Amazon Alexa might be listening in to their private conversations. The joke came to an abrupt end when they discovered a conversation was indeed recorded by Alexa - and then sent to an apparently random person in their contact list. "Unplug your Alexa devices right now!" warned the puzzled recipient, according to ABC affiliate station KIRO7, which first reported the story. Amazon has an explanation as to what happened. But first, here's how Danielle - who didn't want to share her surname with ABC's reporter - described the rather alarming chain of events.

The most popular robot vacuum on Amazon did well in our tests

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

While names like Roomba and Neato might be more well known, the EcoVacs Deebot N79 (available at Amazon) is currently the best selling robot vacuum on Amazon.com. Owners say they like its low price, useful features, and the fact it can be controlled remotely from a smartphone. But just because a product is popular doesn't necessarily mean it's any good. That's why we put the Deebot N79 through our rigorous robot vacuum obstacle course, which includes thresholds, area rugs, pet hair, spilled food, and furniture. While the Deebot N79 isn't the best robot vacuum you can buy, it's an awesome value for the money.

How Real Estate Listing Sites Create Better Experience With Visual Search

#artificialintelligence

In today's digital world, real estate shopping has moved almost exclusively online. Real estate listing portals, such as Zillow or Trulia, have helped usher in the era of visual search as the future of buying or selling your home online. They've gotten so popular in fact, that many of the top real estate portals are managing over one million new images per day as sellers and realtors want to provide the best presentation of their home and users demand to see every nook and cranny before actually visiting the property. In order to keep pace with the onslaught of new property listings and unprecedented traffic from potential home buyers, real estate portals have been desperately looking for solutions to manage their visual assets – ie: photos and videos of properties uploaded by users. You have to realize that along with the benefits of user-generated content (ie: access to millions upon millions of uploaded photos for virtual property tours), real estate portals are faced with the unmanageable task of collecting, organizing and displaying that content in an efficient and easy to navigate manner. First, as a real estate portal, how will you go about sorting through all of those images?
