Decades ago, when I was a new teacher, my colleagues and I used to joke about the constant barrage of changes. "Public education is a moving target you can never hit," a mentor teacher once told me. Huge shifts are coming again. "I'm afraid I'm going to be put in prison for being trans," one of my students said to me after class last week.

As the world contends with the lingering catastrophic effects of a global pandemic, set against the ongoing backdrop of climate disasters and worsening conflict and humanitarian disasters, the need for rapid scientific advancement in response to crisis has never been so apparent. We can't say we weren't warned. In 2015, the United Nations released The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a shared blueprint constituting "an urgent call for action by all countries -- developed and developing -- in a global partnership." Central to the agenda are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that address a range of urgent needs for humanity, from poverty alleviation and gender equality, to decent work, sustainable cities and communities, a clean environment, affordable and clean energy, and peace. The goals were founded on decades of input from global researchers, stakeholders and policy makers.

He says there will be a lot of focus on artificial intelligence, virtual reality, cybersecurity, food security, agriculture, sustainability, and entertainment.

For about six months last year, Nina Nørgaard met weekly for an hour with seven people to talk about sexism and violent language used to target women in social media. Nørgaard, a PhD candidate at IT University of Copenhagen, and her discussion group were taking part in an unusual effort to better identify misogyny online. Researchers paid the seven to examine thousands of Facebook, Reddit, and Twitter posts and decide whether they evidenced sexism, stereotypes, or harassment. Once a week, the researchers brought the group together, with Nørgaard as a mediator, to discuss the tough calls where they disagreed. Misogyny is a scourge that shapes how women are represented online.

Every year I travel the world as part of my job to discover, discuss and share the future with people from all walks of life. And what I found is this: the future is likely to be better than we think – but we need to design and govern it wisely! Just two decades in, the twenty-first century has already presented us with a massive economic crash, geopolitical quagmires and worrisome swings towards popularism. This may not be the optimal context for heralding a New Renaissance - but then again, the original renaissance wasn't born in idyllic circumstances either. Rather, it was a literal rebirth of human culture.
