The new £350 Google Pixel 2 smartwatch that can tell you if it's time to stop stressing

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Google's new smart watch will warn you when you're stressed – and tell you to calm down. The Pixel Watch 2 will measure microscopic beads of sweat on the wrist, alongside heartrate and skin temperature, to work out how the wearer is coping. When a worrying body response is detected, it prompts the user to log their mood, before giving suggestions on interventions, such as guided breathing exercise or going for a walk. The latest update was announced at the tech giant's'Made By Google' event, where it unveiled a host of new features to the £350 device. Among them is a new AI personal trainer added to the associated app by FitBit, the fitness tracking company hat Google bought for £1.8billion in 2019.

Google AI gives YouTube selfie videos a wacky background, but you can't use it (yet)

#artificialintelligence

Google's AI software can detect the subject of a video and change the background. Google's artificial intelligence researchers have a new trick up their sleeves: giving selfie videos a new background the way you can with still photos today. Switching out background scenery is a decades-old technology, but it's generally complicated and time-consuming -- think of making movies with superheros acting in front of green screens so computers can later replace the uniform green color with digital effects like exploding buildings. Having 3D scene data, for example extracted from newer iPhones' twin cameras, makes the process only a little easier. Google, though, trained a neural network with lots of carefully labeled imagery that helped it learn how to distinguish facial features -- eyes, hair, glasses, mouths and so on -- from everything else.

Google Pixel 2 XL Review: The AI-first smartphone

#artificialintelligence

From giving you flight reminders and airport maps, to tracking traffic on your usual commute, to keeping an eye on weather conditions, the Pixel 2 XL is constantly working in the background to ensure you're seeing what you want to see without you needing to ask for it. While this might sound creepy on many levels, I've long gotten used to the idea of having the big companies crunch my data into meaningful material that helps me. I quite enjoy the thrill of having my phone work for me without my needing to tell it what to do, and the Google Pixel 2 XL is quite possibly the best phone on Android that will do that. There are plenty of other subtle touches in the software that I found incredibly useful. One of these is the ability to unlock the phone with a simple'OK Google' command that recognizes your voice specifically, and won't unlock the phone if it's anyone else's voice. And just like the squeezable functionality on the HTC U11, the Google Pixel 2 XL also brings up Google Assistant with a quick squeeze, a feature it calls the'Active Edge'. Additionally, if you turn on the'Now Playing' feature, the phone can identify songs playing in the background and show them right on your lock screen. The function works offline on a small set of pre-programmed tracks, so it won't always work.

More Google Pixel 2 Problems: Google Assistant Not Working With Bluetooth Headphones

International Business Times

Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL owners are complaining about a bug that prevents Google Assistant from working with Bluetooth headphones, Android Police first spotted. Users commenting on a Pixel User Community thread said that when they connect Bluetooth headphones to their devices and activate Google Assistant, it makes a sound that indicates it's listening but does not pick up their voices. "[...] every time that Google Assistant is summoned up and any bluetooth headset is connected, then Assistant will NOT detect audio neither from bluetooth headset nor from phone, said one user in the forum. "Assistant is not detecting audio when squeezed from lock screen with Bluetooth headset. Even when I set the assistant to detect the hot word and hear audio from wired and Bluetooth headsets." "In my case the issue occurs always and not only when the screen is locked and I squeeze to launch the Assistant.

Google and Amazon are spearheading a quiet gadget revolution, and it's going to put pressure on Apple most of all

#artificialintelligence

The Google Pixel 2 smartphone relies on artificial intelligence, not cutting-edge specs, to make its sales pitch to customers. Way back in 1965, Intel cofounder Gordon Moore predicted that computers would get twice as powerful every two years -- a prediction which has mostly come true, and is now enshrined as "Moore's Law." However, many, including Moore himself, now believe Moore's Law is screeching to a halt. It's going to mean a huge shift for the technology industry. "To be honest, it's going to be tougher and tougher for people to develop new and exciting products every year," said Google hardware boss Rich Osterloh, on stage at the company's recent Pixel 2 phone launch event.

Google Pixel 2 Camera Uses AI For Better Pictures: How It Works

International Business Times

The Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL devices, which were revealed earlier this month, are highly focused on imaging, just like their predecessors, the first Pixel devices. On Wednesday, the smartphone company released its first developer preview for Android 8.1 -- Oreo OS, which will make use of the Pixel 2 series' high-end camera capabilities. The Pixel 2 series builds on the success of the first Pixel devices, which were awarded the best smartphone camera of 2016 by DxOMark. The company has, in the past year worked with DxOMark on the cameras for the Pixel 2 and revealed the device on Oct. 4. One of the new features of the device is its neural networks API which is its artificial intelligence based software, that the company says will "enhance the on-device machine intelligence."

OK Google, Pixel 2 not best smartphone camera — but close

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

Jefferson Graham tests the Google Pixel 2 XL smartphone camera--is it the best one ever, as some have said? He compares to the Apple iPhone 8 Plus in a beach shootout on #Talking Tech. LOS ANGELES -- OK Google, we love the new Pixel XL 2 smartphone as a camera, but alas, for photos and videos, our hearts go to the Apple iPhone 8 Plus. With each new smartphone release, critics are quick to dub a new one as the best mobile camera out there. We said just that last year about the then-new Google Pixel, which won our 2017 shootout. Months have gone by, and many new mobile cameras have been released.

Why does Google think you'll buy a $1,000 Chromebook?

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

Everyone's talking about the two smartphones, so we put them head to head. Find out how Google's new Pixel compared to the iPhone X. USA TODAY Google's Matt Vokoun introduces the new Google Pixelbook at the San Francisco Jazz Center October 4, 2017. Why would anyone bother spending $1,000 or more for a Chromebook? After all, most vendors sell Chromebooks as sub-$300 alternatives to traditional laptop PCs. So, what was Google thinking introducing a product that, in some configurations, could be four times more expensive than its competitors?

Google Pixel 2 XL and Pixel 2: Google unveils its iPhone rival

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

Make way for the sequel: Google on Wednesday announced the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphones, its follow-up devices to last year's well-received but poor selling Pixel smartphones. The search giant -- which jumped into making a range of consumer electronics under the'Made by Google' moniker a year ago -- is hoping for a better result with these successor devices, especially as it takes on Apple and its $1,000 upcoming iPhone X. Indeed, Google CEO Sundar Pichai pumped up Google's mission as being a AI-first, rather than mobile first, company. Pixel 2 starts at $649 for a version with 64GB of storage and climbs to $749 for double the storage. It comes in the kind of colors marketers love to nickname: Just Black, Clearly White and Kinda Blue.
