Many clinical tasks require an understanding of specialized data, such as medical images and genomics, which is not typically found in general-purpose large multimodal models. Building upon Gemini's multimodal models, we develop several models within the new Med-Gemini family that inherit core capabilities of Gemini and are optimized for medical use via fine-tuning with 2D and 3D radiology, histopathology, ophthalmology, dermatology and genomic data. Med-Gemini-2D sets a new standard for AI-based chest X-ray (CXR) report generation based on expert evaluation, exceeding previous best results across two separate datasets by an absolute margin of 1% and 12%, where 57% and 96% of AI reports on normal cases, and 43% and 65% on abnormal cases, are evaluated as "equivalent or better" than the original radiologists' reports. We demonstrate the first ever large multimodal model-based report generation for 3D computed tomography (CT) volumes using Med-Gemini-3D, with 53% of AI reports considered clinically acceptable, although additional research is needed to meet expert radiologist reporting quality. Beyond report generation, Med-Gemini-2D surpasses the previous best performance in CXR visual question answering (VQA) and performs well in CXR classification and radiology VQA, exceeding SoTA or baselines on 17 of 20 tasks. In histopathology, ophthalmology, and dermatology image classification, Med-Gemini-2D surpasses baselines across 18 out of 20 tasks and approaches task-specific model performance. Beyond imaging, Med-Gemini-Polygenic outperforms the standard linear polygenic risk score-based approach for disease risk prediction and generalizes to genetically correlated diseases for which it has never been trained. Although further development and evaluation are necessary in the safety-critical medical domain, our results highlight the potential of Med-Gemini across a wide range of medical tasks.

Google's Flagship Gemini AI Model Gets a Major Upgrade
Alphabet's Gemini AI model has been public for only two months, but the company is already releasing an upgrade. Gemini Pro 1.5, launching with limited availability today, is more powerful than its predecessor and can handle huge amounts of text, video, or audio input at a time. Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, which developed the new model, compares its vast capacity for input to a person's working memory, something he explored years ago as a neuroscientist. "The great thing about these core capabilities is that they unlock sort of ancillary things that the model can do," he says. In a demo, Google DeepMind showed Gemini Pro 1.5 analyzing a 402-page PDF of the Apollo 11 communications transcript.

The Sound of Healthcare: Improving Medical Transcription ASR Accuracy with Large Language Models
Adedeji, Ayo, Joshi, Sarita, Doohan, Brendan
In the rapidly evolving landscape of medical documentation, transcribing clinical dialogues accurately is increasingly paramount. This study explores the potential of Large Language Models (LLMs) to enhance the accuracy of Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems in medical transcription. Utilizing the PriMock57 dataset, which encompasses a diverse range of primary care consultations, we apply advanced LLMs to refine ASR-generated transcripts. Our research is multifaceted, focusing on improvements in general Word Error Rate (WER), Medical Concept WER (MC-WER) for the accurate transcription of essential medical terms, and speaker diarization accuracy. Additionally, we assess the role of LLM post-processing in improving semantic textual similarity, thereby preserving the contextual integrity of clinical dialogues. Through a series of experiments, we compare the efficacy of zero-shot and Chain-of-Thought (CoT) prompting techniques in enhancing diarization and correction accuracy. Our findings demonstrate that LLMs, particularly through CoT prompting, not only improve the diarization accuracy of existing ASR systems but also achieve state-of-the-art performance in this domain. This improvement extends to more accurately capturing medical concepts and enhancing the overall semantic coherence of the transcribed dialogues. These findings illustrate the dual role of LLMs in augmenting ASR outputs and independently excelling in transcription tasks, holding significant promise for transforming medical ASR systems and leading to more accurate and reliable patient records in healthcare settings.

This report introduces a new family of multimodal models, Gemini, that exhibit remarkable capabilities across image, audio, video, and text understanding. The Gemini family consists of Ultra, Pro, and Nano sizes, suitable for applications ranging from complex reasoning tasks to on-device memory-constrained use-cases. Evaluation on a broad range of benchmarks shows that our most-capable Gemini Ultra model advances the state of the art in 30 of 32 of these benchmarks - notably being the first model to achieve human-expert performance on the well-studied exam benchmark MMLU, and improving the state of the art in every one of the 20 multimodal benchmarks we examined. We believe that the new capabilities of Gemini models in cross-modal reasoning and language understanding will enable a wide variety of use cases and we discuss our approach toward deploying them responsibly to users.

Google's Gemini AI takes aim at OpenAI and Microsoft's GPT-4
Last week, Google launched its new AI, or rather its new big language model, dubbed Gemini. The Gemini 1.0 model is available in three versions: Gemini Nano is supposed to be best suited for tasks on a specific device, Gemini Pro is supposed to be the best option for a wider range of tasks, and Gemini Ultra is Google's largest language model that will handle the most complex tasks you can give it. Something that Google was keen to highlight at the launch of Gemini Ultra was that the language model outperformed the latest version of OpenAI's GPT-4 in 30 of the 32 most commonly used tests to measure the capabilities of language models. The tests cover everything from reading comprehension and various math questions to writing code for Python and image analysis. In some of the tests, the difference between the two AI models was only a few tenths of a percentage point, while in others it was up to ten percentage points.

How to Use Google's Gemini AI Right Now in Its Bard Chatbot
Google just launched its Gemini AI model. Want to try it out for free? A version of the model, called Gemini Pro, is available inside of the Bard chatbot right now. Also, anyone with a Pixel 8 Pro can use a version of Gemini in their AI-suggested text replies with WhatsApp now and with Gboard in the future. Only a sliver of Gemini is currently available.
Google DeepMind Unveils Its Most Powerful AI Offering Yet
Google DeepMind has announced its much-anticipated family of artificial intelligence chatbots, Gemini, which will compete with OpenAI's GPT series. According to Google, Gemini Ultra, its largest and most capable new model, outperforms OpenAI's most capable model, GPT-4, at a number of text-based, image-based, coding, and reasoning tasks. Gemini Ultra will be available through a new AI chat feature called Bard Advanced from early next year, the company said. It is currently being refined and is undergoing "trust and safety checks, including red-teaming by trusted external parties," according to the announcement. Google DeepMind also announced the launch of Gemini Pro, which is now available to the public through Google's Bard chat interface, and the smaller Gemini Nano, which will run on Google's Pixel 8 Pro smartphone.
