Samsung makes record profit of $109m a day as chip demand soars
South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics logged a record profit of 11.2trn won โ $10bn (ยฃ7.6bn) โ in the July to September period, it said on Tuesday, its best for any quarter. The world's biggest memory chip and smartphone maker had its de facto leader jailed in August for bribery and faced a recall of its flagship Galaxy Note 7 device. But its net profits soared 148% on the same period a year ago, it said in a statement, thanks to strong demand for its memory chips and a recovery in smartphone sales with the roll-out of the new generation Galaxy Note 8. The figures come only two weeks after chief executive Kwon Oh-Hyun resigned, saying the South's biggest firm was facing an "unprecedented crisis" and its current profitability was "merely a fruit of decisions and investment made in the past". The firm described Tuesday's numbers as an "overall robust performance".
Samsung's Leadership Crisis Deepens as CEO Plans Exit
His decision to step away threatens to amplify concerns over a leadership vacuum atop Samsung, which is already challenged by the absence of its de facto leader, Lee Jae-yong, who was convicted in August for bribing South Korea's former president. The appeal trial for Mr. Lee, who has denied wrongdoing, started this week. Mr. Kwon, who joined Samsung in 1985 long before it became a chips heavyweight, will also relinquish his vice chairman post by March, the company said. He had informed confidantes he felt he had accomplished all he had hoped to achieve in his career, according to people familiar with the matter. He had been a steadying force and served as Samsung's public face while Mr. Lee has been away.

Yes, it's Monday, but you might've missed some interesting things over the weekend: kangaroos that confuse self-driving cars, some'Zelda' DLC that's a perfect fit and a new Sony smartphone that could be a contender. Samsung's resurrected Galaxy Note 7 launches on July 7th If you've missed the Galaxy Note 7 since it was discontinued over chronic battery fires, you now have a second chance at ownership... if you're willing to book a flight to Seoul. Samsung has confirmed recent rumors and its own teaser by announcing a refurbished version of the Note 7, the Galaxy Note Fan Edition, that will launch in South Korea on (appropriately enough) July 7th. As you might guess, it's largely the same phone hardware-wise -- the big difference is the use of safer, smaller-capacity batteries, which have, thankfully, passed stricter testing standards. The same things that made the core game great. The new'Zelda' DLC is all about exploration and survival Fans were worried Nintendo would stumble when it came to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's DLC packs.

Samsung Electronics' Galaxy S8 and S8 smartphones are shown off during a media day in Seoul, South Korea, (Photo: Lee Jin-man, AP) NEW YORK--Samsung's Galaxy S8 and its larger sibling the S8 are strong new smartphones I can highly recommend. The devices, which hit stores Friday (for around $720 on up), aren't perfect. Cool-sounding features like iris and facial recognition were extremely spotty for me. Water and dust resistance are great, but other phones now share these traits.

Samsung S8 facial recognition feature fooled by photo, tester says
Samsung looks to move on from its disastrous Note 7 with the new Galaxy S8. Samsung's new flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S8, was unveiled this week with one particularly cool feature. It will unlock by simply identifying your face with its front camera. But now it seems that a mere photo of you will do the honors. The South Korean electronics giant did not comment specifically on the fact that its new product could be fooled, but stressed in a company statement that important payment and other data remains locked behind security layers that are more robust, such as iris and fingerprint authentication.

After liftoff, Samsung's Galaxy S8 will face many unknowns ZDNet
The launch of the Samsung Galaxy S8 March 29 will represent a comeback for the company's mobile unit, which is recovering by the Galaxy Note 7 disaster. What's unclear is how Samsung Galaxy S8 flagship phone will fare given the multiple unknowns the company is facing. Samsung's Galaxy S8 lands amid a backdrop of the company's January report on what went wrong with the Note 7 and how it is fixing its processes to prevent battery problems in the future. That report went a long way to allaying fears, but brand recoveries take time. The device will have new artificial intelligence tools via a service called Bixby.
