How future tech is helping elephants
These intelligent, complex and emotional beasts have come to symbolize wildlife conservation efforts around the globe. Across the African continent, they are under threat from encroaching human settlements and continued poaching -- in the summer of 2018, an aerial survey in Botswana found 87 elephants had been killed and their tusks cut off for their ivory, the biggest slaughter in recent years. But elephants are part of a complex ecosystem and scientists and conservationists know protecting them isn't just crucial to the species itself, but for other African animals, birds and plants. Elephants are a keystone species -- their presence and activities play a crucial role in maintaining the health of the savannah and forests they inhabit. For example, they use their tusks to dig for water, providing this scarce resource for other species as well.
Samsung commits $22 billion to AI, 5G and future tech
Thanks to the success of its smartphones, TVs, appliance and especially chips, Samsung is sitting on a large pile of cash. The company just announced that it will spend a lot of that to develop artificial intelligence, biopharmaceuticals, 5G wireless systems and other futuristic tech. The aim is to become more diversified and less dependent on declining smartphone and electronics markets. In total, Samsung will spend 25 trillion won ($22 billion) over the next three years, as part of an overall 180 trillion won ($160 billion) plan. Samsung will spend the money over the next three years, mainly in Korea, and hire 40,000 new employees, double what it promised before.

Nasdaq vice chairman: AI business sector will come from future tech
Without a doubt, artificial intelligence (AI) is changing how we do things. From today's iterations that power apps in your smartphone, to promises of super-intelligent AI in the next few decades, more companies are pushing for integrating AI technology into what they do. All of this means that there could soon be a new AI business sector thanks to an explosion of innovation, according to Bruce Aust, vice chairman of the U.S. stock exchange Nasdaq. Speaking to CNBC at the ongoing Web Summit conference in Lisbon, Portugal, Aust predicts that AI could lead to the creation of completely new industries or sectors. "I think AI is really going to be the technology behind a lot of these great companies that provide the innovations that will be a new sector we probably don't know about yet," the Nasdaq chief said.

Microsoft asked people who hold research positions in the company to share their thoughts on future developments in their different fields. Microsoft chose 17 women in order to draw attention to the opportunity for careers for women in STEM fields. The researcher's ideas about future technology in 2017 and 2027 make for interesting reading and the world will be a better and more interesting place if half of what they envision comes to pass. One theme that runs through many of the researcher's predictions is that by 2027 we'll be living in what might be called a smartworld. Advances in AI, computer vision, natural language processing, probabilistic programming, and smart objects will embed us in a world that responds to our presence by serving up information about many of the things in our immediate environment.
Brain-controlled drone race pushes future tech
GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA – Wearing black headsets with tentacle-like sensors stretched over their foreheads, the competitors stared at cubes floating on computer screens as their small white drones prepared for takeoff. "Three, two, one … go!" the announcer hollered, and as the racers fixed their thoughts on pushing the cubes, the drones suddenly whirred, rose and buzzed through the air. Some struggled to move, while others zipped confidently across the finish line. The competition -- billed as the world's first drone race involving a brain-controlled interface -- involved 16 pilots using willpower to drive drones through a 10-yard (9.1-meter) dash over an indoor basketball court at the University of Florida on April 16. Organizers hope to make the event an annual intercollegiate spectacle, involving ever-more dynamic moves and challenges.
