Ferrari wanted to take on Chinese EVs with the Luce - then the backlash started
The new Ferrari Luce, the brainchild of iPhone designer Sir Jony Ive, is unlike anything the Italian carmaker has ever created - so is the backlash it is facing. Its launch was such a big deal that Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Pope Leo were invited to view the luxury brand's first electric vehicle (EV). But internet critics, investors and even politicians have hit out at the Luce - which is Italian for light. The firm's shares fell 8% the day after the unveiling, as a host of memes mocked the $640,000 (£475,625) car, which is also its first five-seater. It comes as the global motor industry faces a number of major challenges, including fierce competition from Chinese carmakers.
Google's 'Gemini' is the latest AI software entering fierce competition
Facebook owner Meta has been an AI player for years, hiring some of the field's smartest researchers and using the tech to help decide which of its users should see certain advertisements. In July, it doubled down on a very different approach to AI than its Big Tech rivals. It announced that Llama 2, its GPT4 competitor, would be "open source" -- available for anyone to download, modify and add to their own products for free. The approach won Meta plaudits from tech start-ups who were worried that Google, Microsoft and OpenAI would try to corner the market for advanced AI and squeeze out any competitors. But it's also been criticized for making it easier for people to use AI for malicious purposes.
Europe Lagging On AI Development, Samsung And IBM Lead In AI Patent Race
Award-winning OxFirst, a specialist in the law and economics of IP, has released research that reveals the hidden secrets behind global patent registrations and information on the economic value of patents in the AI sector. While Samsung, IBM and Tencent dominate with the highest number of patents filed, fierce competition between the US and China overshadows other countries, including the EU. Patents are mainly filed in the area of interconnectivity and system architecture, suggesting that top players focus primarily on protecting technologies covering multiple neural nets. Other areas of crucial importance are Machine Learning (ML) and bootstrap methods, alongside procedures used during speech recognition processes; e.g. the further establishment of human-machine dialogue. An analysis of the patent landscape between 2010 and 2020 shows that patents reading on Machine Learning experienced their greatest filing growth in 2017/2018.

Futuristic offices with AI 'brains' could soon make the workplace more comfortable
Employees will not need a key to get into the office of the future when it opens in Berlin this year, featuring ample meeting space, plenty of copy machines always stocked with paper along with high-quality air processed to maximize worker health and minimize sick time. Their smartphones will help guide them around their new workplace -- and they may need the assistance because they will not have permanent desks. With technology changing how and where we work, property developers are tapping artificial intelligence to create more sustainable workplaces to help staff work more efficiently and comfortably. Employees will not need a key to get into the office of the future when it opens in Berlin this year. Fierce competition for talent is turbo-charging the trend in Berlin.
The fierce competition for supremacy in the machine learning chip market - take 2
In my earlier story, I outlined the chip market for machine learning systems and observations made by Deloitte about the direction this is going. To recap, the characteristics of graphics rendering and machine learning algorithms, namely the need to process thousands or millions of data points through an algorithm that uses simple floating point calculations, are similar enough that GPUs have become the preferred engine for AI research and implementation. The result has been phenomenal financial success for NVIDIA, the pioneer of GPU computing, but its success has stoked competition. As befits a dynamic, disruptive market like AI, competition is not all coming at NVIDIA from traditional sources in the processor market, namely Intel and AMD, but both innovative startups and incumbent cloud service providers looking to build a better AI mousetrap. NVIDIA developed and has cornered the market for AI-optimized GPUs, however recently rejuvenated AMD has joined the battle with the Radeon Instinct series.
