Face ID technology used on geese has troubling parallel to communist China: expert

FOX News

Kara Frederick, tech director at the Heritage Foundation, discusses the need for regulations on artificial intelligence as lawmakers and tech titans discuss the potential risks. Artificial intelligence is gaining new uses at a seemingly rapid pace, and the technology is now extending to applications in the animal kingdom. A new AI tool has been developed that allows researchers to use facial recognition to track the faces of geese, which biologists hope will help them understand their way of life and behaviors, according to a report from NPR. Sonia Kleindorfer, a biologist at the University of Vienna, has long studied the species, telling NPR she built off the work of Konrad Lorenz, who studied the birds and was even able to identify individuals within a flock after studying their faces. WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)? But AI technology could now make that easier, Kleindorfer said, creating databases and using facial recognition to track the movements of a goose with 97% accuracy.

iPad Pros With Face ID Confirmed By Upcoming iOS 12 Software Update?

International Business Times

At the WWDC 2018 keynote event on Monday, Apple introduced iOS 12 and its features. Interestingly, new changes that are coming with the update appear to hint at redesigned iPad Pros with Face ID technology. MacRumors reported Tuesday that newly discovered features and changes in iOS 12 appear to suggest that the next-generation iPad Pro tablets could come with an iPhone X-style notch and Face ID technology. One of the features found in iOS 12 is the swiping down gesture from the top right of the display to bring up Control Center. The gesture was first introduced with the iPhone X, which comes with a notch. If the new gesture feature wasn't enough, there are also menu bar changes coming with iOS 12 that are designed to accommodate a notch.

Huawei Announces Own Version Of Face ID That Could Rival Apple's

International Business Times

Huawei just unveiled a new smartphone called the Honor V10, and it also announced that it is working on its own version of Apple's Face ID technology. Huawei claims that its new facial recognition technology is better than Apple's and it can also be used for animated emojis. Huawei's new facial recognition technology is made possible with the depth-sensing camera system. The Chinese phone maker says that it uses a combination of infrared and a projector to create a 3D map of a user's face. Although the process is similar to Apple's Face ID technology on the iPhone X, Huawei's camera system can capture 300,000 points of the user's face in 10 seconds.

South Korean Banks Reject iPhone X Face ID Over Security Concerns

International Business Times

Looks like iPhone X users in South Korea won't be able to use the smartphone's Face ID technology when doing transactions in local banks. Apparently, Korean banks have rejected the idea of providing support for the 10th anniversary iPhone's advanced biometric system. The banks' decision reportedly comes after Face ID security concerns were reported. On Monday, Korea Herald learned that Korean banks have rejected the facial recognition security feature of Apple's iPhone X, such that the technology will not be usable when owners use mobile banking services. Financial industry insiders claim that Korean banks are apparently hesitant to accept Face ID after it was found out that some people were able to penetrate the new verification feature.
