In this week's #DataTalk, we talked with Dr. Anima Anandkumar, Principal Scientist at Amazon AI and Bren Professor at Caltech, about what data scientists need to know about deep learning and how to scale deep learning frameworks. Today we're excited to talk about deep learning with Dr. Anima Anandkumar. Anima serves as the principal scientist at Amazon Web Services. Anima earned her BTech in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology. She also earned her Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Cornell University, and then after that she served as a postdoctoral researcher at MIT. She's the recipient of dozens of awards.

Kristen: Michael, it's really great to be here, thanks. Mike: So Kristen, can you kind of tell us about your journey that brought you into working in data science? I think every entrepreneurial journey starts with a problem that you've become impassioned with, that you really can't sleep well at night until you figure out how to solve. And the challenge that we initially started facing was actually the gap between education and employment.

In the '90s, I came out of industry and went into management consulting. I ran the consulting shop at JD Power and Associates. Jenna Lake is a Computer Vision Engineer at Second Spectrum. She earned a Master of Science in Computer Vision from Carnegie Mellon University and Bachelor's of Science Degrees in Computer Science and Biometric Systems at West Virginia University. She is passionate about finding creative solutions to improve the efficiency of Computer Vision algorithms.
