OpenAI will add a digital watermark to text and code generated in the EU

Engadget

OpenAI just announced its plans to comply with part of the European Union's new AI transparency rules. The company will soon begin adding an invisible watermark to text and code generated in the EU. This follows a similar move by Anthropic earlier this year. OpenAI is using a proprietary system called textGrain that "adds an invisible statistical signal to the model's word choices." Once added, a detector can spot these signals and ascertain if there's a watermark.

EU chief von der Leyen proposes 'associate member' status for Canada

Al Jazeera

EU chief von der Leyen proposes'associate member' status for Canada Share EU chief von der Leyen proposes'associate member' status for Canada on social media European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has raised the prospect of Canada becoming the 27-nation European Union's first "associate member", a striking overture as both seek to pivot away from a hostile United States under President Donald Trump. Von der Leyen's statement on Wednesday came after Prime Minister Mark Carney said earlier this week that Canada was seeking a "unique alliance" with the EU, but not membership. "I would like to work with you on opening the door for Canada to be the first associate member of the EU," von der Leyen told Carney, who was attending her annual keynote speech. The first foreign head of government to attend the annual "State of the European Union" address, his visit comes in advance of an EU-Canada summit in Montreal next month. Carney will deliver his own address to the European Parliament on Thursday.

Carney's new love-in with EU has everything to do with Trump

BBC News

Carney's new love-in with EU has everything to do with Trump Wouldn't it be lovely if Canada was the 28th state of the European Union rather than the 51st state of the United States? The question was rather tongue-in-cheek. US President Donald Trump, who is currently locked in an escalating tariff tussle with Ottawa, has, on a number of occasions, declared his ambition to make Canada the 51st American state - causing deep offence amongst many Canadians. Finland is one of the EU's 27 member states and a close ally of Canada as a fellow Arctic nation. Teasing tones aside, President Stubb put his finger squarely on the pulse of deepening EU-Canadian relations. Canada is more Europe-minded than most Europeans! is a smiling retort you often hear in Brussels at the moment.

ChatGPT, Reddit and Roblox to face the EU's strictest platform rules

Engadget

The European Union is tightening its grip on ChatGPT, Reddit and Roblox. The European Commission (EC) designated ChatGPT as a "Very Large Online Search Engine," and Reddit and Roblox as "Very Large Online Platforms." These three platforms each crossed the threshold of at least 45 million average monthly users in the European Union, triggering the designations that carry "the most stringent rules" under the Digital Services Act (DSA). "These new designations mean that ChatGPT, Reddit and Roblox will now be held to a higher standard of scrutiny and accountability in the European Union, in line with their large impact on our citizens and society," Henna Virkkunen, the EC's executive vice-president for tech sovereignty, security and democracy, said in a press release. The "very large" designation means stricter enforcement with ChatGPT, Reddit and Roblox's services and algorithmic systems, particularly when it comes to how they can spread illegal content, cause negative effects for minors and impact electoral processes.

Position: Bridge the Gaps between Machine Unlearning and AIRegulation

Neural Information Processing Systems

The "right to be forgotten" and the data privacy laws that encode it have motivated machine unlearning since its earliest days. Now, some argue that an inbound wave of artificial intelligence regulations -- like the European Union's Artificial Intelligence Act (AIA) -- may offer important new use cases for machine unlearning. However, this position paper argues, this opportunity will only be realized if researchers proactively bridge the (sometimes sizable) gaps between machine unlearning's state of the art and its potential applications to AI regulation. To demonstrate this point, we use the AIA as our primary case study. Specifically, we deliver a "state of the union" as regards machine unlearning's current potential (or, in many cases, lack thereof) for aiding compliance with various provisions of the AIA. This starts with a precise cataloging of the potential applications of machine unlearning to AIA compliance. For each, we flag the technical gaps that exist between the potential application and the state of the art of machine unlearning. Finally, we end with a call to action: for machine learning researchers to solve the open technical questions that could unlock machine unlearning's potential to assist compliance with the AIA -- and other AI regulations like it.

All Vehicles Sold in the EU Must Be Able to Hook Up to a Breathalyzer

WIRED

The measure is part of a European Union-led strategy to eliminate all drunk-driving-related deaths and injuries by 2050. As of July 1, all vehicles sold within the European Union must include a standard, preinstalled interface that allows a breathalyzer lock to be added to the ignition system. This measure is part of a larger strategy promoted by the EU to reduce drunk-driving-related deaths and injuries by at least 50 percent by 2030. The requirement falls under the Vision Zero program, launched by European authorities more than five years ago, which aims to eliminate alcohol-related traffic fatalities entirely--or get as close to zero as possible--by 2050. The measure also aligns with the timetable established in the EU's General Safety Regulation, which sets specific deadlines for manufacturers to incorporate various safety features into vehicle designs, starting at the factory.

Has Britain become an economic colony?

The Guardian

Has Britain become an economic colony? The UK could've been a true tech leader - but it has cheerfully submitted to US dominance in a way that may cost it dear T wo and a half centuries ago, the American colonies launched a violent protest against British rule, triggered by parliament's imposition of a monopoly on the sale of tea and the antics of a vainglorious king. Today, the tables have turned: it is Great Britain that finds itself at the mercy of major US tech firms - so huge and dominant that they constitute monopolies in their fields - as well as the whims of an erratic president. Yet, to the outside observer, Britain seems curiously at ease with this arrangement - at times even eager to subsidise its own economic dependence. Britain is hardly alone in submitting to the power of American firms, but it offers a clear case study in why nations need to develop a coordinated response to the rise of these hegemonic companies.

GRDD+: An Extended Greek Dialectal Dataset with Cross-Architecture Fine-tuning Evaluation

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

We present an extended Greek Dialectal Dataset (GRDD+) 1that complements the existing GRDD dataset with more data from Cretan, Cypriot, Pontic and Northern Greek, while we add six new varieties: Greco-Corsican, Griko (Southern Italian Greek), Maniot, Heptanesian, Tsakonian, and Katharevusa Greek. The result is a dataset with total size 6,374,939 words and 10 varieties. This is the first dataset with such variation and size to date. We conduct a number of fine-tuning experiments to see the effect of good quality dialectal data on a number of LLMs. We fine-tune three model architectures (Llama-3-8B, Llama-3.1-8B, Krikri-8B) and compare the results to frontier models (Claude-3.7-Sonnet, Gemini-2.5, ChatGPT-5).
