Episode 4: A Consequence of Having Language - Emmy's Black Box: The Podcast
In honor of Spooktober, here's a real... Well, though there is a very special spooky version of the Emmy's Black Box theme song within, the content of the podcast is not so much one of fear but of hope. I spoke with Paul Pangaro, PhD, President of The American Society for Cybernetics and Visiting Scholar of Computational Design at the Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture (previously a Professor of Practice in Human Computer Interaction). We dived into a bit of history around the term Cybernetics itself, and also how the system of Cybernetics played a role in the development and understanding of computation and, more specifically, artificial intelligence. We also talked about the state of Cybernetics today, and our hopes for Cybernetics in the future. As always, please feel free to tweet my @emmysblackbox with your thoughts/opinions about the podcast.

Hong Kong Machine Learning Season 1 Episode 4
Simon did an introductory talk about deep learning techniques applied for natural language processing: CNNs, LSTMs, bi-LSTMs, CRF bi-LSTMs are networks often used to label sentences at the word, or even the character level. Tan did a visual introduction to Topological Data Analysis (TDA), the application of discrete topology to study point clouds. These techniques allow for a robust description of the point clouds properties at multiple scales via persistence diagrams. Robustness and persistence of patterns at multiple scales are a desirable properties, especially in the case of noisy and highly stochastic financial time series. Tan uses the persistence diagrams as features to a machine learning classifier (say XGBoost) to predict ETFs returns.

Hong Kong Machine Learning Season 4 Episode 4
We are looking to organize online x in-person meetups on HK island going forward. Thanks to our sponsor Darwinex to help us supporting the various costs. Abstract: We introduce a class of interpretable tree-based models (P-Trees) for analyzing panel data, with iterative and global (instead of recursive and local) splitting criteria to avoid overfitting and improve model performance. We apply P-Tree to generate a stochastic discount factor model and test assets for cross-sectional asset pricing. Unlike other tree algorithms, P-Trees accommodate imbalanced panels of asset returns and grow under the no-arbitrage condition.

Technology Labs podcast: Episode 4 - Artificial Intelligence Testing
Technology leads podcast is a podcast with three hosts Tom, Daniel, and Rik. Each episode has a guest that will be interviewed. The podcast starts with a couple of interesting tech updates. We question whether these are still podcasts or more leaning towards the audiobook genre. Remote controlling your car with an app is nice, but what if you rent a car and a previous customer can still control it!

#SciRocChallenge tests robots in a realistic smart shopping environment
The European Robotics League, funded by the European Commission to advance research, development and innovation in robotics and artificial intelligence, is the umbrella for three robotics competitions: ERL Consumer, ERL Emergency and ERL Professional service robots. All three leagues meet every two years in the ERL Smart Cities Robotics Challenge, showcasing how real robots can make our lives better in urban environments. The Challenge The SciRoc challenge will be held in the smart shopping mall of the Centre:MK. The challenge focuses on smart shopping and is divided into a series of episodes, each consisting of a task to be performed addressing specific research challenges. In order to accomplish their tasks, robots will have to cooperate with the simulated digital infrastructure of a smart shopping mall.

'Westworld' Recap, Season 2 Episode 4: More Human Than Human
If you thought watching Westworld was like flipping through a blood-soaked college philosophy textbook, you weren't wrong. Its meditations on the nature of the mind are growing increasingly knotty, putting flesh and bones to the meandering thought experiments that keep undergrads up at night. Episode 4 of Season 2 opens in a sleek apartment. Jim Delos (Peter Mullan) is going through his morning routine: riding his exercise bike, sitting down to a cup of coffee, and with a trembling hand spilling the cream. The apartment's walls are one-way mirrors, and on the other side, technicians monitor the conversation.
