MEKiT: Multi-source Heterogeneous Knowledge Injection Method via Instruction Tuning for Emotion-Cause Pair Extraction

Although large language models (LLMs) excel in text comprehension and generation, their performance on the Emotion-Cause Pair Extraction (ECPE) task, which requires reasoning ability, is often underperform smaller language model. The main reason is the lack of auxiliary knowledge, which limits LLMs' ability to effectively perceive emotions and reason causes. To address this issue, we propose a novel \textbf{M}ulti-source h\textbf{E}terogeneous \textbf{K}nowledge \textbf{i}njection me\textbf{T}hod, MEKiT, which integrates heterogeneous internal emotional knowledge and external causal knowledge. Specifically, for these two distinct aspects and structures of knowledge, we apply the approaches of incorporating instruction templates and mixing data for instruction-tuning, which respectively facilitate LLMs in more comprehensively identifying emotion and accurately reasoning causes. Experimental results demonstrate that MEKiT provides a more effective and adaptable solution for the ECPE task, exhibiting an absolute performance advantage over compared baselines and dramatically improving the performance of LLMs on the ECPE task.


AIMA at SemEval-2024 Task 3: Simple Yet Powerful Emotion Cause Pair Analysis

The SemEval-2024 Task 3 presents two subtasks focusing on emotion-cause pair extraction within conversational contexts. Subtask 1 revolves around the extraction of textual emotion-cause pairs, where causes are defined and annotated as textual spans within the conversation. Conversely, Subtask 2 extends the analysis to encompass multimodal cues, including language, audio, and vision, acknowledging instances where causes may not be exclusively represented in the textual data. Our proposed model for emotion-cause analysis is meticulously structured into three core segments: (i) embedding extraction, (ii) cause-pair extraction & emotion classification, and (iii) cause extraction using QA after finding pairs. Leveraging state-of-the-art techniques and fine-tuning on task-specific datasets, our model effectively unravels the intricate web of conversational dynamics and extracts subtle cues signifying causality in emotional expressions. Our team, AIMA, demonstrated strong performance in the SemEval-2024 Task 3 competition. We ranked as the 10th in subtask 1 and the 6th in subtask 2 out of 23 teams.


Samsung Research China-Beijing at SemEval-2024 Task 3: A multi-stage framework for Emotion-Cause Pair Extraction in Conversations

In human-computer interaction, it is crucial for agents to respond to human by understanding their emotions. Unraveling the causes of emotions is more challenging. A new task named Multimodal Emotion-Cause Pair Extraction in Conversations is responsible for recognizing emotion and identifying causal expressions. In this study, we propose a multi-stage framework to generate emotion and extract the emotion causal pairs given the target emotion. In the first stage, Llama-2-based InstructERC is utilized to extract the emotion category of each utterance in a conversation. After emotion recognition, a two-stream attention model is employed to extract the emotion causal pairs given the target emotion for subtask 2 while MuTEC is employed to extract causal span for subtask 1. Our approach achieved first place for both of the two subtasks in the competition.


MIPS at SemEval-2024 Task 3: Multimodal Emotion-Cause Pair Extraction in Conversations with Multimodal Language Models

This paper presents our winning submission to Subtask 2 of SemEval 2024 Task 3 on multimodal emotion cause analysis in conversations. We propose a novel Multimodal Emotion Recognition and Multimodal Emotion Cause Extraction (MER-MCE) framework that integrates text, audio, and visual modalities using specialized emotion encoders. Our approach sets itself apart from top-performing teams by leveraging modality-specific features for enhanced emotion understanding and causality inference. Experimental evaluation demonstrates the advantages of our multimodal approach, with our submission achieving a competitive weighted F1 score of 0.3435, ranking third with a margin of only 0.0339 behind the 1st team and 0.0025 behind the 2nd team. Emotion-cause pair extraction method based on multi-granularity information and multi-module interaction

The purpose of emotion-cause pair extraction is to extract the pair of emotion clauses and cause clauses. On the one hand, the existing methods do not take fully into account the relationship between the emotion extraction of two auxiliary tasks. On the other hand, the existing two-stage model has the problem of error propagation. In addition, existing models do not adequately address the emotion and cause-induced locational imbalance of samples. To solve these problems, an end-to-end multitasking model (MM-ECPE) based on shared interaction between GRU, knowledge graph and transformer modules is proposed. Furthermore, based on MM-ECPE, in order to use the encoder layer to better solve the problem of imbalanced distribution of clause distances between clauses and emotion clauses, we propose a novel encoding based on BERT, sentiment lexicon, and position-aware interaction module layer of emotion motif pair retrieval model (MM-ECPE(BERT)). The model first fully models the interaction between different tasks through the multi-level sharing module, and mines the shared information between emotion-cause pair extraction and the emotion extraction and cause extraction. Second, to solve the imbalanced distribution of emotion clauses and cause clauses problem, suitable labels are screened out according to the knowledge graph path length and task-specific features are constructed so that the model can focus on extracting pairs with corresponding emotion-cause relationships. Experimental results on the ECPE benchmark dataset show that the proposed model achieves good performance, especially on position-imbalanced samples.


PetKaz at SemEval-2024 Task 3: Advancing Emotion Classification with an LLM for Emotion-Cause Pair Extraction in Conversations

In this paper, we present our submission to the SemEval-2023 Task~3 "The Competition of Multimodal Emotion Cause Analysis in Conversations", focusing on extracting emotion-cause pairs from dialogs. Specifically, our approach relies on combining fine-tuned GPT-3.5 for emotion classification and a BiLSTM-based neural network to detect causes. We score 2nd in the ranking for Subtask 1, demonstrating the effectiveness of our approach through one of the highest weighted-average proportional F1 scores recorded at 0.264.


UniMEEC: Towards Unified Multimodal Emotion Recognition and Emotion Cause

Multimodal emotion recognition in conversation (MERC) and multimodal emotion-cause pair extraction (MECPE) has recently garnered significant attention. Emotions are the expression of affect or feelings; responses to specific events, thoughts, or situations are known as emotion causes. Both are like two sides of a coin, collectively describing human behaviors and intents. However, most existing works treat MERC and MECPE as separate tasks, which may result in potential challenges in integrating emotion and cause in real-world applications. In this paper, we propose a Unified Multimodal Emotion recognition and Emotion-Cause analysis framework (UniMEEC) to explore the causality and complementarity between emotion and emotion cause. Concretely, UniMEEC reformulates the MERC and MECPE tasks as two mask prediction problems, enhancing the interaction between emotion and cause. Meanwhile, UniMEEC shares the prompt learning among modalities for probing modality-specific knowledge from the Pre-trained model. Furthermore, we propose a task-specific hierarchical context aggregation to control the information flow to the task. Experiment results on four public benchmark datasets verify the model performance on MERC and MECPE tasks and achieve consistent improvements compared with state-of-the-art methods.


Enhancing Large Language Model with Decomposed Reasoning for Emotion Cause Pair Extraction

Emotion-Cause Pair Extraction (ECPE) involves extracting clause pairs representing emotions and their causes in a document. Existing methods tend to overfit spurious correlations, such as positional bias in existing benchmark datasets, rather than capturing semantic features. Inspired by recent work, we explore leveraging large language model (LLM) to address ECPE task without additional training. Despite strong capabilities, LLMs suffer from uncontrollable outputs, resulting in mediocre performance. To address this, we introduce chain-of-thought to mimic human cognitive process and propose the Decomposed Emotion-Cause Chain (DECC) framework. Combining inducing inference and logical pruning, DECC guides LLMs to tackle ECPE task. We further enhance the framework by incorporating in-context learning. Experiment results demonstrate the strength of DECC compared to state-of-the-art supervised fine-tuning methods. Finally, we analyze the effectiveness of each component and the robustness of the method in various scenarios, including different LLM bases, rebalanced datasets, and multi-pair extraction.


ECQED: Emotion-Cause Quadruple Extraction in Dialogs

The existing emotion-cause pair extraction (ECPE) task, unfortunately, ignores extracting the emotion type and cause type, while these fine-grained meta-information can be practically useful in real-world applications, i.e., chat robots and empathic dialog generation. Also the current ECPE is limited to the scenario of single text piece, while neglecting the studies at dialog level that should have more realistic values. In this paper, we extend the ECPE task with a broader definition and scenario, presenting a new task, Emotion-Cause Quadruple Extraction in Dialogs (ECQED), which requires detecting emotion-cause utterance pairs and emotion and cause types. We present an ECQED model based on a structural and semantic heterogeneous graph as well as a parallel grid tagging scheme, which advances in effectively incorporating the dialog context structure, meanwhile solving the challenging overlapped quadruple issue. Via experiments we show that introducing the fine-grained emotion and cause features evidently helps better dialog generation. Also our proposed ECQED system shows exceptional superiority over baselines on both the emotion-cause quadruple or pair extraction tasks, meanwhile being highly efficient.


Emotion Prediction Oriented method with Multiple Supervisions for Emotion-Cause Pair Extraction

Emotion-cause pair extraction (ECPE) task aims to extract all the pairs of emotions and their causes from an unannotated emotion text. The previous works usually extract the emotion-cause pairs from two perspectives of emotion and cause. However, emotion extraction is more crucial to the ECPE task than cause extraction. Motivated by this analysis, we propose an end-to-end emotion-cause extraction approach oriented toward emotion prediction (EPO-ECPE), aiming to fully exploit the potential of emotion prediction to enhance emotion-cause pair extraction. Considering the strong dependence between emotion prediction and emotion-cause pair extraction, we propose a synchronization mechanism to share their improvement in the training process. That is, the improvement of emotion prediction can facilitate the emotion-cause pair extraction, and then the results of emotion-cause pair extraction can also be used to improve the accuracy of emotion prediction simultaneously. For the emotion-cause pair extraction, we divide it into genuine pair supervision and fake pair supervision, where the genuine pair supervision learns from the pairs with more possibility to be emotion-cause pairs. In contrast, fake pair supervision learns from other pairs. In this way, the emotion-cause pairs can be extracted directly from the genuine pair, thereby reducing the difficulty of extraction. Experimental results show that our approach outperforms the 13 compared systems and achieves new state-of-the-art performance.
