The Morning After: Mark Zuckerberg is surprisingly angry about closed platforms
In a fireside chat on Monday between NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg at the SIGGRAPH 2024, the latter dropped the f-bomb. After exchanging leather jackets (apparently two billionaires can't get custom-made jackets that fit), the two talked about the future of AI, chatbots and open large language models. Zuckerberg launched into a lengthy rant about his frustrations with "closed" ecosystems, like Apple's App Store. None of that is new -- the Meta founder has been feuding with Apple for years. Zuckerberg, decked out in the aforementioned leather jacket and chain, said: "There have been too many things that I've tried to build and have been told'nah, you can't really build that' by the platform provider that, at some level, I'm just like, 'nah, fuck that.'" MMA training, "Carthage must die" tees and rebellious banter all have more than a whiff of Succession's Kendall Roy.
Sony's latest PS5 beta update gives DualSense controllers better audio
The latest beta update for the PlayStation 5 will make it easier to hear what's going on in your game. Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has announced the software update, which will enable DualSense and DualSense Edge wireless controllers to produce louder audio so that you can hear in-game sounds and audio chats more clearly. In addition to giving controllers the ability to produce louder sounds, the update also gives their noise cancellation feature a boost. Sony's announcement says the controllers now have better mic input, thanks to a new AI machine learning model. It'll give PS5's system the ability to suppress background noises, such as the game audio itself, allowing your voice to go through clearly and improving the quality of voice chats as a whole.
PS5 Black Friday deals 2023: Get $50 off the PlayStation 5
We've found plenty of PS5 Black Friday deals, including games, accessories, store funds and the console itself. Grab the disc-based PlayStation 5 system for $450 on Amazon or $50 off the PS5 Slim bundled with Marvel's Spider-Man 2 or Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III. In addition, you can save on DualSense controllers and games from franchises like God of War, Assassin's Creed and Star Wars Jedi. If you're happy to go disc-free, Amazon has the month-old PS5 Slim console bundled with a digital code for Marvel's Spider-Man 2, which Engadget found to be "bigger and better" than the 2018 original, for $499 ($60 off). Sony's "Slim" PS5 console (officially called the PS5 Digital Edition) removes the system's disc drive but lets you change your mind later.
PlayStation 5 DualSense controllers: You can soon buy them in red or black
If you are among the lucky video game fans to snag a PlayStation 5, you can soon add controllers in different colors to your collection. Sony announced it will launch versions of its DualSense controller for the video game console in "cosmic red" and "midnight black." The new controllers will be available at participating retailers next month, said Sony, which provided no specific launch dates but noted availability windows would vary by location. PlayStation's website lists the black controller for $69.99 (the same price as the stock white model), and the red controller for $74.99. The DualSense controller has received rave reviews since launching with the console last November.
Five must-play games for your new PS5
It's that special time of year when the air is crisp, the holiday cheer is overwhelming and the only thing that sounds appealing is curling up on the couch with a big blanket and a brand new video game console. Luckily, the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 launched just over a month ago, and both of them are welcome living-room upgrades, offering more power, larger game worlds, and more seamless gameplay than the previous generation. In particular, the PS5 features a lineup of launch games worth your time. Here, we've collected five of the best titles available to play right now on PS5, just in time for your couch-based holiday plans. If you only play one game on PS5, make sure it's Miles Morales.
How 'Astro's Playroom' captures the magic of PS5's DualSense controller
Sure, Spider-Man: Miles Morales and the Dark Souls remake are getting most of the PlayStation 5 love, but Sony's most significant next-generation launch game may be Astro's Playroom. It's a showpiece for the new DualSense controller's haptic capabilities, which includes finely tuned rumbling and adaptive triggers with adjustable tension. Best of all, you can start playing it on your PS5 right away; it's pre-installed on every system. Just like with Astro Bot Rescue Mission on the PlayStation VR, the diminutive robot is the ideal guide as Sony breaks new ground with hardware. As I mentioned in my PlayStation 5 review, simply booting up the game jolted me awake -- it vibrated in my hands as if it was the one holding me.

The Best Reason to Get a PS5 Is Its New Controller
The last console generation was all about black plastic rectangles. The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 looked like sleek, futuristic VCRs. It was not an exciting or inspired vibe. This console generation, Sony and Microsoft are leaning into their respective aesthetics. Microsoft's Xbox Series X is bigger and squarer than ever before. The PlayStation 5 is more radical.
Forget 4K and Solid State Drives. The Controller Is the Best Reason to Get a PlayStation 5
As a new generation of video game consoles arrives, many have wondered whether the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will actually feel "next gen"--that is to say, markedly better. New console generations used to mark major leaps in performance, fidelity and ways of playing (think of the graphical leap from the NES to the Super Nintendo, or the jump to 3-D games with the original PlayStation). But more recently, there's been less distance between one generation of consoles and the next. And today, high-powered gaming PCs already surpass the PS5 and Microsoft's Xbox Series X in the specs department, delivering higher frame rates and better visuals. All this was on my mind when I first fired up the PlayStation 5.
