DJI Mavic Air Price, Release Date Revealed: 4K Drone Blends Mavic Pro, Spark
DJI has announced a new drone that combines some of the best features of the Mavic Pro and the DJI Spark. Called the DJI Mavic Air, the new $799 drone is super portable and is also capable of shooting 4K video. The DJI Mavic Air will be available in onyx black, arctic white and flame red color options. At first glance, the drone looks similar to the DJI Spark. When folded up, the Mavic Air can still fit in a large pocket.
DJI Mavic Air: Specs, Price, Release Date
Drone-maker DJI announced a new hobby aircraft today, one that weighs just a shade under a pound, fits in a jacket pocket, and is capable of flying itself. At that price, it hovers in DJI's lineup between the $499 DJI Spark, the gesture-controlled flyer released last year, and the more capable $999 Mavic Pro. The Mavic Air is tiny, half the size of a Mavic Pro, and about half the weight at just 15 ounces. When folded up, it's about the size of a paperback novel. At a press event in New York on Tuesday, DJI exec Michael Perry announced the Mavic Air by pulling it out of the pocket of his puffy Patagonia vest.

Flying a DJI Spark by waving your hand isn't as great as it sounds
DJI's Spark is the company's first attempt at a true drone for everyone. DJI has made no secret about the fact it thinks non-RC enthusiasts want a lightweight, compact quadcopter that's easy to control. That's exactly what the Spark is. But after spending some time with it (and a Mavic Pro, for comparison), I'm torn. The Spark is, indeed, incredibly fun, simple to use and easy to carry around.
The DJI Spark Is The First Drone I Actually Want To Buy
DJI on Wednesday unveiled the Spark drone, the smallest model the popular Chinese dronemaker has released to date. A first for DJI, the Spark can be controlled entirely through hand gestures for quick airborne selfies. Piloting it with an accompanying app allows for a broader array of maneuvers, including flight patterns like "Helix," which mimics Hollywood-style action movie helicopter shots. An optional remote control adds further control options and dramatically increases the range. Like other recent DJI drones, the Spark is capable of detecting and avoiding objects in its flight path.
DJI's Spark drone is so small and smart, it could be a game-changer
DJI unveiled its tiny Spark drone on Wednesday, and it's sort of the anti-drone for consumers. It's small enough to fit in your hand, launches and lands from there, can be controlled almost entirely with gestures, lets you take a selfie from just 10 feet away, has a whole collection of pre-programmed video shots to help you figure out what to do with it, and even charges via a standard micro USB port. "Is it easy to fly?" "How am I going to use it?" The drone, which goes on pre-sale today and ships mid-June, seeks to dramatically shorten the distance from a consumer buying a drone (DJI said 46% of costumers have the intention to buy one this year) to actually flying one. Spark, DJI's smallest and lightest drone, is not at all imposing like the DJI Phantom series or even the foldable and excellent -- but more expensive -- DJI Mavic Pro.
DJI Might Launch The Small Spark Drone During May 24th Event
DJI has sent out email invitations to the media for a launch event in May. It's believed that the company will officially announce the DJI Spark, which was leaked earlier this month. DJI's upcoming launch event will take place in New York City on May 24th. The invite included the tagline "Seize The Moment," and the company is teasing a "BIG" announcement at the said event.
