Having reviewed dozens of drones of all shapes, sizes, and prices, I'd recently come to the conclusion that smaller, lighter, and cheaper drones were the way to go for 90 percent of consumers. But then DJI launched its new premium-priced, jumbo-size flagship consumer drone, the Mavic 4 Pro, and made me fall in love all over again. Yes, this drone is seriously impressive. But before I deep-dive the phenomenally good camera and ridiculously long range, it's important to note that the Mavic 4 Pro will not be officially available in the US. As well as ongoing issues around flight restrictions and security, a DJI spokesperson told WIRED, "Like many global companies, we have had to adjust our market strategy as local conditions and the industry environment have evolved. While we do not have a timeline for when we can introduce the product to the US market, we are closely monitoring the situation and actively exploring every possible solution."

Drone-maker DJI announced a new hobby aircraft today, one that weighs just a shade under a pound, fits in a jacket pocket, and is capable of flying itself. At that price, it hovers in DJI's lineup between the $499 DJI Spark, the gesture-controlled flyer released last year, and the more capable $999 Mavic Pro. The Mavic Air is tiny, half the size of a Mavic Pro, and about half the weight at just 15 ounces. When folded up, it's about the size of a paperback novel. At a press event in New York on Tuesday, DJI exec Michael Perry announced the Mavic Air by pulling it out of the pocket of his puffy Patagonia vest.

Bought 2 of these drones, purchased 1 of them 4 days after the mavic was announced... took 3 months to receive... While waiting for this drone, I purchased and recommend many aftermarket accessories for the mavic... drone landing gear, waterproof decals, extra batteries, props, carry bag, SD card, drone mat, remote control 3D stick protector, and control adapter for ipad, etc. I had plenty of time to take my time and purchase these items, and also read up on and seen a lot of how to videos on youtube... so I was very prepared to know somewhat how to operate the drone. Now after receiving this drone, I had been waiting so long, so there was no reason I could not take my time to calibrate, go through most of prep before I flew this, changing modes, from stick control to drone control, for very smooth footages. When flying indoors... make sure your radio control reads between drone and controller, do not fly if this is in the red, even though the screen says it's ready to fly... the obstacle avoidance symbol can turn read and can't read, the drone could drift off real fast not giving you much time to control and land.. ( learned this the hard way, damaging props).

DJI has sent out email invitations to the media for a launch event in May. It's believed that the company will officially announce the DJI Spark, which was leaked earlier this month. Announced within a week of each other, the GoPro Karma and the DJI Mavic Pro are the season's (the year's?) hottest drones. They both fold up, they both shoot stabilized 4K video, and they'll both scare the hell out of your cat. Both have things that are absolutely fantastic, and both have things that are completely infuriating. If I had to recommend one it would be the GoPro Karma, but certainly not without reservations. The Mavic is wonderfully tiny--small enough to literally sit on the palm of your hand.
