Artificial Intelligence (AI) may well be the most powerful technology of the 21st century, helping to solve humanity's most complex unsolved problems: environmental, social, and more. Yet sceptics believe that AI's risks are as large as its potential benefits. How can they be avoided? And why isn't the most powerful technology being used more widely today to solve the world's greatest "wicked" problems? Great technological advances are often a double-edged sword.

Even Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg sparked a heated, and ongoing, debate about whether or not AI will take control of humanity. Indeed, AI continues to demonstrate impressive capabilities. Earlier this year, the AI built into Google's DeepMind AlphaGo defeated the world's top Go player, Chinese professional, Ke Jie. Go is a popular Asian board game reputed to be much more complex than chess. AI is not just for gaming, it also demonstrates a high reliability for detecting cancerous tissue in medical images.

"I, for one, welcome our new computer overlords" wrote Ken Jennings after his defeat at the hands of IBM's Watson on Jeopardy. The computer, with a display of swirling dots around an orb, certainly didn't register the pseudo oath of fealty, but for many the defeat was a public display of artificial intelligence's (AI's) real arrival. Countless movies, not the least of which was the Terminator series, discussed the promise and peril of AI. But until jeopardy, it seemed to be in the realm of science (or speculative) fiction. Today AI is part of our everyday lives, whether most people realize it or not.

Artificial intelligence--which simultaneously possesses the greatest potential for evolutionary change as well as the overwhelming possibility for world destruction--is a technology that is already be upon us. Defined as machines that are able to learn, plan, and problem solve--or, more basically, technology with the ability to work and react like a human would--AI is a daunting field of computer science that has been making waves in recent years. In popular culture, movies and the media often portray AI in a dark and dangerous light. However, experts believe that AI will actually positively augment the human race, though how exactly is still unknown. The question still remains: do the benefits of AI outweigh the dangers?

At this year's Annual Meeting of the New Champions, hosted by the World Economic Forum in Tianjin, China, the Meta-Council on Emerging Technologies choose the top ten technologies of 2016, based on their potential to transform industry and society. A diverse range of breakthrough technologies, including autonomous vehicles, natural language artificial intelligence, and next generation batteries, were examined in collaboration with Scientific American, highlighting advances that have the power to improve lives, transform industries, and safeguard the planet. The report also provides an opportunity to debate human, societal, economic, or environmental risks and concerns that the technologies may pose prior to widespread adoption. "The global community needs to come together and agree on common principles if our society is to reap the benefits and hedge the risks of these technologies," said Dr. Bernard Meyerson, Chief Innovation Officer of IBM, and Chairman of the Meta-Council. In raising awareness about these technologies, moreover, the Council aims to address challenges in investment and regulation.
