AI Slop Might Finally Cure Our Internet Addiction

The Atlantic - Technology

For a while, dating apps seemed to make it easier, putting a city's worth of single people in the palm of your hand. But AI has cast a paranoid pall over what can already be a suboptimal experience. If you get a message that feels a little off, it is hard to know whether you are flirting with a bot--or just someone insecure enough to use ChatGPT as their own Cyrano de Bergerac. In frustration, my friend Lonni has started picking up women at the nail salon like it's 1997. Or, in the midst of an emotionally fraught conversation with a friend or family member, a text might read strangely.

AI chatbots reveal 10 unconventional - but achievable - New Year's resolutions for 2024... and the results are surprising

Daily Mail - Science & tech

People turn to AI for career advice, meal ideas and travel tips, but with the new year started, DailyMail.com Research shows that 23 percent of Americans ditch their New Year's resolutions by the end of the first week, and 43 percent quit by the end of January. The failures stem from people'thinking too big,' but Google's Bard, Microsoft's Bing and ChatGPT have curated 10 realistic but unconventional resolutions for 2024. These included hosting a monthly themed dinner party to build stronger bonds with others, eating a vegan meal each week to improve health and starting a digital detox. Google's Bard said: 'Host a themed dinner party every month.

A New Coca-Cola Flavor at the End of the World

The Atlantic - Technology

Coca-Cola often experiments with new flavors, and they're usually flavors you can imagine, having tasted them before: vanilla, cherry, lemon. But the latest is called Y3000, a reference to the far-off year 3000, and one that Coca-Cola says was concocted with the help of, in some way, artificial intelligence. It smells like circus-peanut candies and tastes mostly like Coke. The company says this soda was made to evoke a "positive future," with a label that has "a futuristic feel," due to its color palette of silver, violet, magenta, and cyan. The Coca-Cola logo on the Y3000 bottle is made of "fluid dot clusters that merge to represent the human connections of our future planet."

Social interaction expert reveals event guest numbers should be a multiple of four

Daily Mail - Science & tech

For the perfect dinner party, the best number of guests is a multiple of four. That is because four is the maximum number of people who can maintain a successful conversation, according to an expert on social interaction. The rule of four is seen in Shakespeare plays, the first Sex and the City film, with its four female best friend characters, and even the rom-com Love Actually. Professor Robin Dunbar, who highlights the conversation number limit in his recent book The Social Brain, has seen it repeatedly in groups of people, everywhere from the park to the pub, when people in these settings were studied. He says we can only keep in mind five people's mental states at once, including our own.

The 49ers will win Super Bowl 2020, Alexa predicts, but Siri and Google Assistant punt

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

The San Francisco 49ers are going to win the Super Bowl. That's what Amazon Alexa says anyway. Though the voice inside my Echo speaker acknowledged that the Kansas City Chiefs are favored, she offered her own prediction: "The 49ers will be joining the Patriots and Steelers with a six-pack of Super Bowl wins." Her counterparts at Apple and Google weren't as willing to go out on a limb. When asked, Siri responded, "The odds favor the Chiefs to win by 1 point."

*The Matrix* Is Nothing Without Its Sequels--Nothing!

WIRED

As the founding document of our present hypermodern unreality, it'll always be, 20 years after its release or 200, fair game for chat. Over medium-rare steaks that may or may not be 1s and 0s, guests happily quote the Oracle ("Take a cookie"), defend Keanu's acting, quote Agent Smith ("It's the smell!"), rehash Baudrillardian basics, and convince each other that there is no soup spoon (but pass the soup). Then the inevitable moment comes, and it is not fine. Some dweeby gasbag in attendance--picture him now; he may very well be you--gathers up the requisite oxygen to declare, with huffing sense of purpose and in sweaty anticipation of back slaps and applause: "Those sequels sure did suck, though!" Dammit, there goes the buzz.

What is a Neural Network?

@machinelearnbot

They diagnose illnesses, help you find photos of your cat, decide whether to give you a loan1. They make up a huge part of what we call "machine learning" or "artificial intelligence," especially the new, exciting, scary parts of it. And, given the magnitude of the problems they can handle, they're simpler than you'd expect. Most explanations of neural networks for lay people are kind of lousy, because they always start by talking about brains. They'll define neural networks as "computer systems modeled on the human brain" or "programs that learn the same way as people" or even as "artificial brains."
