System Shock review – you versus a murderous AI in revived sci-fi horror classic
Originally released in 1994, System Shock is best known through the games it inspired. Its blend of first-person shooting, sci-fi roleplay, and survival horror made it a touchstone for Deus Ex, BioShock, Dead Space and Prey. But it never enjoyed the success of its descendants; it lives in the shadow of its children. The greatest accomplishment a remake could achieve, then, would be to afford System Shock the credit it deserves. Nightdive Studios' remake does this, but not in ways you might expect.
Amazon will publish the next Tomb Raider game
Lara Croft is making a return with the help of Amazon Games. The company will publish the next Tomb Raider title, which Crystal Dynamics is developing. Amazon said the studio is using Unreal Engine 5 to craft the biggest and most expansive Tomb Raider game to date. It'll likely be a few years before you can get your hands on the next Tomb Raider game, which is coming to multiple platforms. It's still in early development, but Amazon says it'll retain all of the franchise's hallmarks.

Embracer is buying Tomb Raider, Deus Ex and three Square Enix game studios
Swedish game company Embracer Group has just made a blockbuster deal to acquire Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montréal and Square Enix Montréal for what seems like a bargain $300 million price, the company confirmed in a press release. The deal includes a "catalogue of IPs including Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief, Legacy of Kain and more than 50 back-catalogue games from Square Enix Holdings," it wrote. The transaction is subject to regulatory approval. Those studios represent around 1,100 employees across eight global locations, the company noted. When the deal is finalized, Embracer will have 14,000 employees, 10,000 game developers and 124 internal studios.
Square Enix's 'Stay Home and Play' bundle gives you 54 games for under $40
Everyone's giving away games these days and while Square Enix's new "Stay Home and Play" bundle isn't free, it might as well be. The breadth and scope of the deal is pretty amazing: More than 50 games for under $40. It's the sort of anthology bundle we usually see from publishers during the Steam Summer and Winter Sale, but now available on a random weekend in May. And sure, less than $1 per game makes sense in some cases. Does anyone really want to replay the original Just Cause?

Deus Ex...Artificial Intelligence?
Researchers at New York's Ichan [sic] School of Medicine ran a deep-learning experiment to see if it could train a system to predict cancer. The school, based within Mount Sinai Hospital, had obtained access to the data for 700,000 patients, and the data set included hundreds of different variables. Called Deep Patient, the system used advanced techniques to spot new patterns in data that didn't entirely make sense to the researchers but turned out to be very good at finding patients in the earliest stages of many diseases, including liver cancer. Somewhat mysteriously, it could also predict the warning signs of psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia. But even the researchers who built the system didn't know how it was making decisions.

Eidos Montreal Confirms 'Deus Ex' Plans Amid Work On 'Tomb Raider' Game
The "Deus Ex" series was not canceled. This is what Eidos Montreal studio head David Anfossi confirmed recently. The project has been put on the back burner as the developer focuses its attention on completing "Shadow of the Tomb Raider." A video interview from last week shows Anfossi being asked about "Deus Ex" and he set the record straight by saying that Eidos Montreal did not forget about the series at all. "It's not dead," he said before adding that they are still thinking about the franchise's future.
This week in games: Destiny 2's Ghost gets Amazon Echo commands, Deus Ex isn't dead
The most important news this week is either the Civilization VI expansion or the fact that EA's stock lost $3 billion in value thanks to Battlefront II. But hey, there's also lots of Destiny 2 ne--wait, come back! Okay, there's also new footage of Okami HD, Star Citizen's started selling off fictitious land titles to fund development, Square says Deus Ex might not be quite dead yet, Jazz Jackrabbit hit GOG.com, and Battlezone II is being remade for 2018. This is gaming news for November 27 to December 1. Get this: I accidentally paid $120 to play XCOM: The Bureau Declassified, that mediocre third-person shooter 2K forced out a couple years ago. I rented it from GameFly and then...forgot to send it back.
This week in games: Square Enix abandons Hitman, Assassin's Creed rumors point to Egypt
It's one month until E3, and that means it's time for the rumors, leaks, and let's-get-ahead-of-the-flood announcements to start appearing. Need for Speed and Assassin's Creed kicked off the season this week with a below-the-radar announcement and a leak, respectively. That, plus a steep discount on the Steam Link, a 20-minute Prey run, Hitman and Mass Effect put on hiatus, and an amazing Strafe "movie trailer" as we head into the weekend. This is gaming news for May 8 to 12. I think it's safe to say at this point that Valve's whole Steam Machine ecosystem hasn't exactly taken off.

This week in games: Play Prey as a toilet paper roll, install Doom on a Porsche, and more
We already wrote about it earlier this week but here's a reminder: The Ghost Recon Wildlands demo marketing stunt open beta runs this weekend, so if you're bored on Saturday and want to give the game a spin before plunking down $60, now's your chance. What else happened this week? Overwatch teased a new hero, Battlefield 1 teased a new...something, Prey showed off its toilet paper physics, Humble decided to sell a billion hours of Civilization for $15, and someone installed Doom on a Porsche 911. If you've heard 25 years of Civilization praise and thought "I should play those games some day," I have one hell of a deal for you: Most of the Civilization games, packed into a bundle. A Humble Bundle, that is.

Now You Can Effectively Get The PS4 Pro For $339
The PS4 Pro only launched last fall, though it appears that the first deals are rolling in. Sony's more powerful version of the standard PS4 is being offered at its base price of $399 on Newegg's eBay portal, but it comes with two free games: Rise of the Tomb Raider and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, both which are excellent narrative action RPGs in their own ways. Rise of the Tomb Raider seems to be going for $40 on Amazon, with Deus Ex coming in at $20 (a steal, by the way). So assuming you have neither game and want both, that puts the real price down at $339. Both are discs, too, which is unusual in these situations.
