How AI could help local newsrooms remain afloat in a sea of misinformation

Engadget

It didn't take long for the downsides of a generative AI-empowered newsroom to make themselves obvious, between CNet's secret chatbot reviews editor last November and Buzzfeed's subsequent mass layoffs of human staff in favor of AI-generated "content" creators. The specter of being replaced by a "good enough AI" looms large in many a journalist's mind these days with as many as a third of the nation's newsrooms expected to shutter by the middle of the decade. But AI doesn't have to necessarily be an existential threat to the field. As six research teams showed at NYU Media Lab's AI & Local News Initiative demo day in late June, the technology may also be the key to foundationally transforming the way local news is gathered and produced. Now in its second year, the initiative is tasked with helping local news organizations to "harness the power of artificial intelligence to drive success." It's backed as part of a larger $3 million grant from the Knight Foundation which is funding four such programs in total in partnership with the Associated Press, Brown Institute's Local News Lab, NYC Media Lab and the Partnership on AI.

YC's latest batch sure was a lot of 'maybe AI can do... this?'

#artificialintelligence

Sitting through hundreds of startups on YC Demo Days, you're not always sure whether you are actually perceiving patterns or if your brain, as coffee battles with monotony, is inventing them in a kind of pareidolia for business plans. This year, though, the theme was pretty obvious: "AI can do that, probably! Certainly today's AI models are more capable than yesterday's, and yesteryear's. But we've seen over and over how these systems demo well but fall down under systematic requirements or as tools with reliable and repeatable results. It's hard not to see this batch as the precursors of a coming wave of AI-powered shovelware.

Global Big Data Conference

#artificialintelligence

This morning, Y Combinator (YC) hosted a demo day for its 2022 Summer Cohort -- the 35th demo day in the incubator's history. Featuring founders from 30 countries and startups across sectors including developer tools, fintech and healthcare, the day saw no shortage of compelling pitches. The competition was fiercer than usual, owing to YC's decision in early August to cut the batch size by 40% to around 250 companies in light of economic headwinds. But a particular category of startup stood out: those applying AI and machine learning to solve problems, especially for business-to-business clients. This year had only 14 such startups compared to 20 last year, which makes sense as the overall cohort is also smaller.

Deeptech Labs explains deeptech and reveals first cohort

#artificialintelligence

Arm-backed accelerator Deeptech Labs has unveiled its inaugural cohort of startups and its CEO has explained what he really means when he talks about deeptech. Deeptech is a catch-all phrase that has been around in the technology sector for decades. Usually, it refers to startups innovating to solve considerable scientific or engineering challenges. The generic term has in the past included everything from artificial intelligence (AI) and biotech to quantum computing and robotics. Just like with AI and blockchain, startups often use deeptech as a buzzword when trying to drum up fresh capital.

My failed startup: Lessons I learned by not becoming a millionaire

#artificialintelligence

Let's start with the one minute version: I was part of the EF12 London cohort in 2019, where I met my co-founder. A privacy-preserving medical-data marketplace and AI platform built around federated deep learning. The purpose of the platform would have been to allow data scientists to train deep learning models on highly sensitive healthcare data without that data ever leaving the hospitals. At the same time, thanks to a novel data monetization strategy and marketplace component, hospitals would have been empowered to make money from the data they are generating. We received pre-seed funding, valued at $1 million. Then the race for demo day began with frantic product building and non-stop business development.

Meet the 19 startups in AngelPad's 12th batch

#artificialintelligence

AngelPad just wrapped the 12th run of its months-long New York City startup accelerator. For the second time, the program didn't culminate in a demo day; rather, the 19 participating startups were given pre-arranged one-on-one meetings with venture capital investors late last week. AngelPad co-founders Thomas Korte and Carine Magescas did away with the demo day tradition last year after nearly a decade operating AngelPad, which is responsible for mentoring startups including Postmates, Twitter-acquired Mopub, Pipedrive, Periscope Data, Zum and DroneDeploy. "Demo days are great ways for accelerators to expose a large number of companies to a lot of investors, but we don't think it is the most productive way," Korte told TechCrunch last year. Competing accelerator Y Combinator has purportedly considered their eliminating demo day as well, though sources close to YC deny this.
