"We are the engine room of Google, and we're plugging in AI everywhere now," Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, an AI-focused subsidiary of Google's parent company, Alphabet, told WIRED in an interview ahead of the announcement.

It was a cross between a UK government investment promotion video and the Danny Boyle 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony, except for one crucial detail - it was voiced by Jensen Huang, the American Nvidia artificial intelligence (AI) and microchip magnate. This week, Trump said the tech tycoon was taking over the world and the boss of the company, which hit a market value of $4tn (£2.9tn) this summer, appears to have gone all-in on the UK in quite an extraordinary way.

The Nobel Prizes in 2024 were the first in history to recognize the contributions of AI to the field of science. If Hassabis gets his way, they won't be the last. AlphaFold's impact may have been broad enough to win its creators a Nobel Prize, but in the world of AI, it is seen as almost hopelessly narrow.

A day after recognizing former Google vice president and engineering fellow Geoffrey Hinton for his contributions to the field of physics, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has honored a pair of current Google employees. On Wednesday, DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis and senior research scientist John Jumper won half of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, with the other half going to David Baker, a professor at the University of Washington. Baker, Hassabis and Jumper all advanced our understanding of those essential building blocks of life that are responsible for functions both inside and outside the human body. The Nobel Committee cited Baker's seminal work in computational protein design. Since 2003, Baker and his research team have been using amino acids and computers to design entirely new proteins.

Sir Demis Hassabis, who was jointly awarded the chemistry prize on Wednesday, got his big break in the tech world as co-designer of 1994's hit game Theme Park, where players create and operate amusement parks. Born in London to a Greek Cypriot father and Singaporean mother, Hassabis went on to gain a double first in computer science at Cambridge University, complete a PhD in cognitive neuroscience and co-found the artificial intelligence startup DeepMind, which Google bought for 400m in 2014. The 48-year-old was knighted for services to AI this year. He is the chief executive of Google's AI unit, Google DeepMind, and its achievements in using AI to predict and design the structure of proteins has spurred the award of the Nobel to Hassabis and his colleague John Jumper, who are sharing half of the award with the other half going to the US academic David Baker.

Hassabis and Jumper created AlphaFold, which in 2020 solved a problem scientists have been wrestling with for decades: predicting the three-dimensional structure of a protein from a sequence of amino acids. The AI tool has since been used to predict the shapes of all proteins known to science. Their latest model, AlphaFold 3, can predict the structures of DNA, RNA, and molecules like ligands, which are essential to drug discovery. DeepMind has also released the source code and database of its results to scientists for free. "I've dedicated my career to advancing AI because of its unparalleled potential to improve the lives of billions of people," said Demis Hassabis.

'One of the discoveries being recognised this year concerns the construction of spectacular proteins,' said Heiner Linke, Chair of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry. 'The other is about fulfilling a 50-year-old dream – predicting protein structures from their amino acid sequences.

For much of last year, knocking OpenAI off its perch atop the tech industry looked all but impossible, as the company rode a riot of excitement and hype generated by a remarkable, garrulous, and occasionally unhinged program called ChatGPT. Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis has recently at least given Sam Altman some healthy competition, leading the development and deployment of an AI model that appears both as capable and as innovative as the one that powers OpenAI's barnstorming bot. Ever since Alphabet forged DeepMind by merging two of its AI-focused divisions last April, Hassabis has been responsible for corralling its scientists and engineers in order to counter both OpenAI's remarkable rise and its collaboration with Microsoft, seen as a potential threat to Alphabet's cash-cow search business. Google researchers came up with several of the ideas that went into building ChatGPT, yet the company chose not to commercialize them due to misgivings about how they might misbehave or be misused. In recent months, Hassabis has overseen a dramatic shift in pace of research and releases with the rapid development of Gemini, a "multimodal" AI model that already powers Google's answer to ChatGPT and a growing number of Google products.

A new open letter calling for regulation to mitigate'the risk of extinction from AI' has been signed by more than 350 industry experts, including several developing the tech. The 22-word statement reads: 'Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war.' The short letter was signed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, creator of ChatGPT, who called on Congress to establish regulations for AI. While the document does not provide details, the statement likely aims to convince policymakers to create plans for the event AI goes rogue, just as there are plans in place for pandemics and nuclear wars. Altman was joined by other known leaders in AI, including Demis Hassabis of Google DeepMind, Dario Amodei of Anthropic and executives from Microsoft and Google.
