Windows Search is becoming your PC's new AI-powered control center
The Dell Laptop Buying Guide UK: Which Dell Laptop Should You Buy? When you purchase through links in our articles, we may earn a small commission. Windows Search is becoming your PC's new AI-powered control center Think of Windows Search as a chatbot within Windows, even more than Microsoft Copilot. For years -- decades, really -- the entry point inside Windows has been the Start menu. But from what Microsoft showed as part of its AI vision for Windows 11 this week, Start might be on its way out.
Windows 11 may finally auto-switch dark mode without PowerToys soon
PCWorld reports that Windows 11 may soon natively support automatic light and dark mode switching, a feature previously only possible through Microsoft PowerToys. Microsoft appears to be testing this in experimental builds, with settings allowing transitions based on fixed times or location-based sunrise and sunset cycles. A potential release could arrive with the Windows 11 26H2 update in October, helping reduce eye strain and save power across devices. It appears Microsoft has finally decided to give Windows 11 a true, full-fledged dark mode. That's according to Windows Latest, which discovered this by taking a closer look at the new experimental builds of Windows 11. Windows Latest says it'll soon be possible for Windows 11 to switch automatically between light and dark modes, depending on requirements and the selected application. Until now, this has only been possible using Microsoft PowerToys or certain third-party programs. The absence of a true auto-switching light/dark mode in Windows 11 has been one of its biggest criticisms for years. Although Microsoft hasn't yet officially announced anything, the signs are promising.
Hands on: Windows Copilot can't decide what it is
Windows Copilot is one part Bing, one part Windows. It's an assistant who can perform tasks for you one moment, but then pleads ignorance the next. Microsoft's AI assistant within Windows certainly has potential, but during my time with it, achieving a consistent experience was one of its unexpected challenges. Windows Copilot, the migration of Microsoft's AI-powered Bing Chat into Windows, debuted Thursday as part of the latest Windows Insider build for the Dev Channel; Microsoft announced Copilot at the end of May, with a promise to bring it into testing by the end of June. It's now here, though it hasn't reached its full potential yet.
Dark Mode's Shadowy Promises
Around 2016, "Night mode" or "night shift"--a screen display option that features a light-on-dark color scheme--began cropping up all over our devices. That year, Apple and Twitter released their own versions of the feature. Google and others soon followed, all of them promising to mitigate the harms of blue light exposure. They aimed to address new concerns about the impact of screens on circadian rhythms and preempt a full-blown movement against late-night screen use. Eventually, the setting promised a much vaguer set of around-the-clock benefits, including improved focus, energy savings, and reduced eye strain.
Google Maps uses AI to predict traffic and ETA, dark mode for Maps may be in the works
Google Maps takes assistance from Deep Minds, a London-based AI lab owned by Google's parent company Alphabet to get accurate results for users. Google, in a blog post, explains how the AI helps it collect data using neural networks to predict future traffic. This data includes live traffic information collected anonymously from Android devices, historical traffic data, information like speed limits and construction sites from local governments, and also factors like the quality, size, and direction of any given road, The Verge noted. "We then combine this database of historical traffic patterns with live traffic conditions, using machine learning to generate predictions based on both sets of data," Johann Lau, product Manager Google Maps, wrote in the blog post. Other than the AI, Google relies on traffic data from authorities of local governments and real-time feedback from users.

Colab gives us the ability to build complex and heavy machine learning and deep learning models without having to expend our machine's limited resources. I can certainly appreciate this given how much I used to struggle on my machine! The'out of memory' error is now quite infamous in the data science community – Google Colab provides us with the workaround and adds several cherries on top! I love the free GPU and TPU support – it's simply unparalleled and unrivaled in any other coding IDE.
