'Assassin's Creed Origins' is getting a 60FPS boost on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles

Engadget

No, your eyes don't deceive you -- Ubisoft is upgrading an older Assassin's Creed game for modern consoles. The developer has revealed that a 60 frames per second update for 2017's Assassin's Creed Origins is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on June 2nd. The boost doesn't appear to include 4K support or other visual embellishments, but this could still breathe new life into the game if you haven't touched it in a while. It's not clear what prompted a 60FPS boost for a game released three years before PS5 and Xbox Series consoles existed. Ubisoft did release a similar upgrade for Assassin's Creed Odyssey in 2021, but that was a year earlier and for a more recent title. Origins was one of the better-received recent games in the franchise, though, and Ubi has a strong incentive to rejuvenate interest in the series ahead of Infinity.

Engadget

Starting today through to May 21st, the standalone versions of Ubisoft's Discovery Tour: Ancient Greece and Discovery Tour: Ancient Egypt are free to download on PC as part of the company's Play Your Part, Play at Home campaign to help teachers and students during the coronavirus pandemic. They allow you to explore Assassin's Creed Origins and Odyssey's game worlds without worrying about combat or mission objectives. The company worked with professional historians to create the experiences and incorporated a variety of primary sources like archival photos into each tour.

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice dominates at video game Bafta awards

The Guardian

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, a dark mythological adventure that follows a young warrior suffering from psychosis, was the big winner at the 2018 Bafta video game awards on Thursday night at Tobacco Dock, London. The game, which was developed in conjunction with psychologists and neuroscientists to ensure its accurate depiction of mental illness, was nominated in nine categories and won for best British game, best performance, artistic achievement, audio achievement and a new category, games beyond entertainment, which celebrates new releases with a political or social message. Accepting the latter prize, psychologist Paul Fletcher, a professor of neuroscience at Cambridge University who worked closely with the game's Cambridge-based developer, Ninja Theory, said: "Mental illness is usually characterised by the fact that it's invisible. Working with Ninja Theory has shown me something valuable: games can aspire to and achieve a remarkable exploration of state of the mind and mental suffering." However, the night's biggest award, best game, also provided its biggest shock.

'We give access to a lost world': Assassin's Creed's new life as a virtual museum

The Guardian

Even if you're not particularly interested in video games, you'll probably have heard of Assassin's Creed. They're a series of historically themed action games that take place in digital recreations of places such as Revolution-era Paris, medieval Jerusalem and 1860s London. Playing Assassin's Creed involves climbing up ancient buildings and mingling with the residents of cities of the past, meeting (and occasionally assassinating) historical figures as a member of an ancient, clandestine brotherhood working against the Templars. The games have been around since 2007 and have made an awful lot of money for their publisher, Ubisoft. The company employs a team of hundreds of artists, historians, writers, coders, sound designers and more to create these virtual places.

'Assassin's Creed Origins' virtual tours can actually teach history

Engadget

The Assassin's Creed series is known for its vast and richly detailed historical environments, and well... lots of murder. What you might not realize is just how much work goes into making these virtual windows into the past somewhat realistic. That's something Ubisoft is aiming to highlight with Assassin's Creed Origins' Discovery Tour. You can think of it as a museum-like experience set within the game's meticulous rendition of ancient Egypt. To turn one of the most popular gaming franchises in the world into a truly useful educational tool.

'Assassin's Creed: Origins' Update Comes With Annoying Stuttering Issue

International Business Times

"Assassin's Creed: Origins" on PC received a new update on Wednesday. And while fans at first were joyful at the thought of a new patch, they soon found out that the update actually has a big problem. Apparently, the update is causing the game on quad-core CPUs to stutter. The stuttering issue is so bad that some players thought Ubisoft downgraded the game's performance on PC with the new update. One player with the handle stormesp took to Reddit to claim that the update caused Draw Distance and LOD (level of detail) to drop to the ground in all settings.
