Google announces a series of updates in Google Maps using artificial intelligence (AI) that have been or are about to be released in the coming year. Live View uses augmented reality (AR) cues to avoid those situations where one starts walking in the undesired direction. Live View is powered by global localization. It is an AI technology that uses AI to scan billions of Street view images and understand your exact orientation. Thus, it helps Live View understand an object's precise altitude and placement of some of the trickiest-to-navigate places indoors, like airports and malls.

Google Home is barely six months old, and Google is piling on new features. On Wednesday at its I/O developer conference in Mountain View, the company announced upgrades focused on personalizing your interactions and making them hands-free. Presented by Rishi Chandra, Google's Vice President for Home Products, the new features leapfrog Amazon's popular Echo assistant in some ways, while in other ways Google is just catching up. "A phone call is still the easiest way" to communicate with others, Chandra said, as he announced the availability of hands-free calling for Google Home. "Just ask the Google assistant to make the call and we can connect you to any land or cell line in the U.S. or Canada completely free," he said.

Translating text on your smartphone just got a whole lot easier. Google on Wednesday rolled out new updates for the Android and iOS versions of its Translate app. Android users are getting a new feature called Tap to Translate, which lets you translate text just by highlighting it. The feature works in any app that lets you highlight, according to Google. When you select some text, a Translate icon will appear at the top of your screen.
