Contrastive timbre representations for musical instrument and synthesizer retrieval

Efficiently retrieving specific instrument timbres from audio mixtures remains a challenge in digital music production. This paper introduces a contrastive learning framework for musical instrument retrieval, enabling direct querying of instrument databases using a single model for both single- and multi-instrument sounds. We propose techniques to generate realistic positive/negative pairs of sounds for virtual musical instruments, such as samplers and synthesizers, addressing limitations in common audio data augmentation methods. The first experiment focuses on instrument retrieval from a dataset of 3,884 instruments, using single-instrument audio as input. Contrastive approaches are competitive with previous works based on classification pre-training. The second experiment considers multi-instrument retrieval with a mixture of instruments as audio input. In this case, the proposed contrastive framework outperforms related works, achieving 81.7\% top-1 and 95.7\% top-5 accuracies for three-instrument mixtures.


DistiLLM-2: A Contrastive Approach Boosts the Distillation of LLMs

Despite the success of distillation in large language models (LLMs), most prior work applies identical loss functions to both teacher- and student-generated data. These strategies overlook the synergy between loss formulations and data types, leading to a suboptimal performance boost in student models. To address this, we propose DistiLLM-2, a contrastive approach that simultaneously increases the likelihood of teacher responses and decreases that of student responses by harnessing this synergy. Our extensive experiments show that DistiLLM-2 not only builds high-performing student models across a wide range of tasks, including instruction-following and code generation, but also supports diverse applications, such as preference alignment and vision-language extensions. These findings highlight the potential of a contrastive approach to enhance the efficacy of LLM distillation by effectively aligning teacher and student models across varied data types.


Contrastive representations of high-dimensional, structured treatments

Estimating causal effects is vital for decision making. In standard causal effect estimation, treatments are usually binary- or continuous-valued. However, in many important real-world settings, treatments can be structured, high-dimensional objects, such as text, video, or audio. This provides a challenge to traditional causal effect estimation. While leveraging the shared structure across different treatments can help generalize to unseen treatments at test time, we show in this paper that using such structure blindly can lead to biased causal effect estimation. We address this challenge by devising a novel contrastive approach to learn a representation of the high-dimensional treatments, and prove that it identifies underlying causal factors and discards non-causally relevant factors. We prove that this treatment representation leads to unbiased estimates of the causal effect, and empirically validate and benchmark our results on synthetic and real-world datasets.


Contrastive Approach to Prior Free Positive Unlabeled Learning

Positive Unlabeled (PU) learning refers to the task of learning a binary classifier given a few labeled positive samples, and a set of unlabeled samples (which could be positive or negative). In this paper, we propose a novel PU learning framework, that starts by learning a feature space through pretext-invariant representation learning and then applies pseudo-labeling to the unlabeled examples, leveraging the concentration property of the embeddings. Overall, our proposed approach handily outperforms state-of-the-art PU learning methods across several standard PU benchmark datasets, while not requiring a-priori knowledge or estimate of class prior. Remarkably, our method remains effective even when labeled data is scant, where most PU learning algorithms falter. We also provide simple theoretical analysis motivating our proposed algorithms and establish generalization guarantee for our approach.
