Generative Linguistics, Large Language Models, and the Social Nature of Scientific Success

Chomsky (1968: 3) greeted the rise of computing technology with skepticism, arguing that "the kinds of structures that are realizable in terms of [computational methods ] are simply not those that must be postulated to underlie the use of language . " 55 years later, Piantadosi (2023: 15) celebrated the release of ChatGPT by directing that same criticism toward generative linguistic s: "the success of large language models is a failure for generative theories because it goes against virtually all of the principles these theories have espoused . " Chesi ( forthcoming) may not agree with Piantadosi's criticisms, but he does take them as a harbinger of scientific crisis. The minimalist program, hampered by a lack of formal and empirical rigor, has failed to produce a comprehensive, self - consistent theory of syntax. ChatG PT's apparent linguistic competence, in tandem with the success of computational accounts of gradient acceptability and online phenomena, seem to suggest that "generative linguistics no longer dictates the agenda for future linguistic challenges" ( Chesi forthcoming: 2). In order to survive, Chesi warns, generativists need to make progress towards a theory that is based on precisely stated principles and evaluated on a common set of explananda . Chesi's target paper presents the current collision of the worlds as a debate about the intellectual merits of generativist theories. According to Chesi, the success of generativism depends on generativists' ability to resolve their deficits of rigor, so that they can parry the theoretical attacks that language model s have levied against core principles of minimalism. This response argues, contrary to Chesi's framing but consistent with current consensus in the history and sociology of science (Fleck 1935; Kuhn 1962; Mullin s 1975; Latour 1984; Law & Lodge 1984), that the generativist crisis described by Piantadosi and Chesi is social in nature, and cannot be averted by intellectual means.


OM4OV: Leveraging Ontology Matching for Ontology Versioning

Due to the dynamic nature of the semantic web, ontology version control is required to capture time-varying information, most importantly for widely-used ontologies. Despite the long-standing recognition of ontology versioning (OV) as a crucial component for efficient ontology management, the growing size of ontologies and accumulating errors caused by manual labour overwhelm current OV approaches. In this paper, we propose yet another approach to performing OV using existing ontology matching (OM) techniques and systems. We introduce a unified OM4OV pipeline. From an OM perspective, we reconstruct a new task formulation, measurement, and testbed for OV tasks. Reusing the prior alignment(s) from OM, we propose a pipeline optimisation method called cross-reference (CR) mechanism to improve overall OV performance. We experimentally validate the OM4OV pipeline and the cross-reference mechanism in modified Ontology Alignment Evaluation Initiative (OAEI) datasets. We also discuss the insights on OM used for OV tasks, where some false mappings detected by OV systems are not actually false.


GraphMatcher: A Graph Representation Learning Approach for Ontology Matching

Ontology matching is defined as finding a relationship or correspondence between two or more entities in two or more ontologies. To solve the interoperability problem of the domain ontologies, semantically similar entities in these ontologies must be found and aligned before merging them. GraphMatcher, developed in this study, is an ontology matching system using a graph attention approach to compute higher-level representation of a class together with its surrounding terms. The GraphMatcher has obtained remarkable results in in the Ontology Alignment Evaluation Initiative (OAEI) 2022 conference track.


SANOM Results for OAEI 2019

Simulated annealing-based ontology matching (SANOM) participates for the second time at the ontology alignment evaluation initiative (OAEI) 2019. This paper contains the configuration of SANOM and its results on the anatomy and conference tracks. In comparison to the OAEI 2017, SANOM has improved significantly, and its results are competitive with the state-of-the-art systems. In particular, SANOM has the highest recall rate among the participated systems in the conference track, and is competitive with AML, the best performing system, in terms of F-measure. SANOM is also competitive with LogMap on the anatomy track, which is the best performing system in this track with no usage of particular biomedical background knowledge. SANOM has been adapted to the HOBBIT platfrom and is now available for the registered users.

Utrecht is more than 1,300 years old and located in the center of the Netherlands, about 40 minutes by train from Amsterdam.
