Can ChatGPT Code Communication Data Fairly?: Empirical Evidence from Multiple Collaborative Tasks
Hao, Jiangang, Cui, Wenju, Kyllonen, Patrick, Kerzabi, Emily
Assessing communication and collaboration at scale depends on a labor intensive task of coding communication data into categories according to different frameworks. Prior research has established that ChatGPT can be directly instructed with coding rubrics to code the communication data and achieves accuracy comparable to human raters. However, whether the coding from ChatGPT or similar AI technology exhibits bias against different demographic groups, such as gender and race, remains unclear. To fill this gap, this paper investigates ChatGPT-based automated coding of communication data using a typical coding framework for collaborative problem solving, examining differences across gender and racial groups. The analysis draws on data from three types of collaborative tasks: negotiation, problem solving, and decision making. Our results show that ChatGPT-based coding exhibits no significant bias across gender and racial groups, paving the road for its adoption in large-scale assessment of collaboration and communication.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has demonstrated unprecedented performance across various domains, and its application to communication systems is an active area of research. While current methods focus on task-specific solutions, the broader trend in AI is shifting toward large general models capable of supporting multiple applications. In this work, we take a step toward a foundation model for communication data--a transformer-based, multi-modal model designed to operate directly on communication data. We propose methodologies to address key challenges, including tokenization, positional embedding, multimodality, variable feature sizes, and normalization. Furthermore, we empirically demonstrate that such a model can successfully estimate multiple features, including transmission rank, selected precoder, Doppler spread, and delay profile.
Scaling up the Evaluation of Collaborative Problem Solving: Promises and Challenges of Coding Chat Data with ChatGPT
Hao, Jiangang, Cui, Wenju, Kyllonen, Patrick, Kerzabi, Emily, Liu, Lei, Flor, Michael
Collaborative problem solving (CPS) is widely recognized as a critical 21st century skill. Efficiently coding communication data is a big challenge in scaling up research on assessing CPS. This paper reports the findings on using ChatGPT to directly code CPS chat data by benchmarking performance across multiple datasets and coding frameworks. We found that ChatGPT-based coding outperformed human coding in tasks where the discussions were characterized by colloquial languages but fell short in tasks where the discussions dealt with specialized scientific terminology and contexts. The findings offer practical guidelines for researchers to develop strategies for efficient and scalable analysis of communication data from CPS tasks.
Scalable AI Generative Content for Vehicular Network Semantic Communication
Perceiving vehicles in a driver's blind spot is vital for safe driving. The detection of potentially dangerous vehicles in these blind spots can benefit from vehicular network semantic communication technology. However, efficient semantic communication involves a trade-off between accuracy and delay, especially in bandwidth-limited situations. This paper unveils a scalable Artificial Intelligence Generated Content (AIGC) system that leverages an encoder-decoder architecture. This system converts images into textual representations and reconstructs them into quality-acceptable images, optimizing transmission for vehicular network semantic communication. Moreover, when bandwidth allows, auxiliary information is integrated. The encoder-decoder aims to maintain semantic equivalence with the original images across various tasks. Then the proposed approach employs reinforcement learning to enhance the reliability of the generated contents. Experimental results suggest that the proposed method surpasses the baseline in perceiving vehicles in blind spots and effectively compresses communication data. While this method is specifically designed for driving scenarios, this encoder-decoder architecture also holds potential for wide use across various semantic communication scenarios.
Learning Stochastic Dynamical Systems as an Implicit Regularization with Graph Neural Networks
Guo, Jin, Gao, Ting, Lan, Yufu, Zhang, Peng, Yang, Sikun, Duan, Jinqiao
Stochastic Gumbel graph networks are proposed to learn high-dimensional time series, where the observed dimensions are often spatially correlated. To that end, the observed randomness and spatial-correlations are captured by learning the drift and diffusion terms of the stochastic differential equation with a Gumble matrix embedding, respectively. In particular, this novel framework enables us to investigate the implicit regularization effect of the noise terms in S-GGNs. We provide a theoretical guarantee for the proposed S-GGNs by deriving the difference between the two corresponding loss functions in a small neighborhood of weight. Then, we employ Kuramoto's model to generate data for comparing the spectral density from the Hessian Matrix of the two loss functions. Experimental results on real-world data, demonstrate that S-GGNs exhibit superior convergence, robustness, and generalization, compared with state-of-the-arts.
Semi-supervised Variational Temporal Convolutional Network for IoT Communication Multi-anomaly Detection
The consumer Internet of Things (IoT) have developed in recent years. Mass IoT devices are constructed to build a huge communications network. But these devices are insecure in reality, it means that the communications network are exposed by the attacker. Moreover, the IoT communication network also faces with variety of sudden errors. Therefore, it easily leads to that is vulnerable with the threat of attacker and system failure. The severe situation of IoT communication network motivates the development of new techniques to automatically detect multi-anomaly. In this paper, we propose SS-VTCN, a semi-supervised network for IoT multiple anomaly detection that works well effectively for IoT communication network. SS-VTCN is designed to capture the normal patterns of the IoT traffic data based on the distribution whether it is labeled or not by learning their representations with key techniques such as Variational Autoencoders and Temporal Convolutional Network. This network can use the encode data to predict preliminary result, and reconstruct input data to determine anomalies by the representations. Extensive evaluation experiments based on a benchmark dataset and a real consumer smart home dataset demonstrate that SS-VTCN is more suitable than supervised and unsupervised method with better performance when compared other state-of-art semi-supervised method.
Will artificial intelligence make you a better leader?
Agile leadership and AI both depend on learning to let go. Consider this real-life scene: Reflecting on the difficult moments of his week, the new CEO of a UK manufacturer felt angry. His attention kept going back to the tension in several executive-team meetings. He had an urge to shake the team and push several of its members, who were riven by old conflicts, to stop fighting and start collaborating to solve the company's real problems. He also sensed, though, that a brute-force approach was unlikely to get very far, or to yield the creative insights that the company desperately needed to keep up with its fast-changing competitive environment.
