1,000-year-old medieval sword emerges from Dutch river after chance discovery: 'Barely corroded'
SOLVA Archaeology Service in Belgium announced the recent discovery of ancient Roman artifacts and remains, including a well-preserved dog, in Velzeke. A remarkable medieval sword with rare symbols was recently put on display in a Dutch museum, over a year after it was found by construction workers unexpectedly. The discovery of the sword was announced by the Netherlands' National Museum of Antiquities (RMO) in Leiden on June 24. The artifact, named the Linschoten Sword, was found in March 2024 during "maintenance dredging activities," the museum said in a press release. Construction workers were struck by a "long piece of iron" while cleaning a small river known as the Korte Linschoten, the statement noted.
A Chance Discovery on Vacation Changed My Whole Perspective on Wine
During a recent stay in London, my wife and I took an early evening stroll down Lamb's Conduit Street, in the West End district of Bloomsbury, a mere 15-minute walk from the din of Piccadilly Circus but a world away: peaceful, elegant, a medley of quaint shops and stately houses, tucked amid which was a restaurant called Noble Rot. The atmosphere was convivial, the food delicious, the wine exquisitely paired. On the bar counter were copies of a small but thick magazine, also called Noble Rot, adorned with a bright hipster-cartoon cover. Out of curiosity, I bought one--and, as sometimes happens in random moments, my take on a whole slice of life began to change. In this case, what changed was my attitude toward wine and its seriously playful possibilities.

Paranoid Transformer: Reading Narrative of Madness as Computational Approach to Creativity
Agafonova, Yana, Tikhonov, Alexey, Yamshchikov, Ivan P.
This papers revisits the receptive theory in context of computational creativity. It presents a case study of a Paranoid Transformer - a fully autonomous text generation engine with raw output that could be read as the narrative of a mad digital persona without any additional human post-filtering. We describe technical details of the generative system, provide examples of output and discuss the impact of receptive theory, chance discovery and simulation of fringe mental state on the understanding of computational creativity.
First Horned Dinosaur Remains Found In North America In Chance Discovery From Mississippi
A large body of water separated the present-day North American continent into two halves during most of the late Cretaceous Period, between 95 and 66 million years ago, and because of the seaway linking the Arctic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico, land animals on one side could not make it to the other, and would therefore evolve independently. One such genus of animals, trapped on the western half, was the horned dinosaur, whose remains have been found in western North America, as well as Asia. However, the discovery of a tooth in Mississippi provides evidence that horned dinosaurs were present in eastern North America as well. The fossil, dated to between 66 and 68 million years ago, is from a dinosaur closely related to Triceratops, the most well-known genus of horned dinosaurs. The find also suggests that there could have existed some land connection between the two land masses thought to be completely separate at the time. This is a tooth of a ceratopsid horned dinosaur from Mississippi.
Shikake as Affordance and Curation in Chance Discovery
Abe, Akinori (Chiba University)
In this paper first I introduce curation and affordance in chance discovery. According to Matsumura's definition, a shikake is a trigger to start a certain action or to change person's mind and behaviour. As a result of the action, all or part of problem will be solved. A chance and shikake are in a certain sense similar. In addition, affrodance seems to play a significant role in shikakeology. From the point I will discuss the relationships between chance discovery and Shikakeology.
