CodeGEMM: ACodebook-Centric Approach to Efficient GEMM in Quantized LLMs

Neural Information Processing Systems

Weight-only quantization is widely used to mitigate the memory-bound nature of LLM inference. Codebook-based methods extend this trend by achieving strong accuracy in the extremely low-bit regime (e.g., 2-bit). However, current kernels rely on dequantization, which repeatedly fetches centroids and reconstructs weights, incurring substantial latency and cache pressure. We present CodeGEMM, a codebook-centric GEMM kernel that replaces dequantization with precomputed inner products between centroids and activations stored in a lightweight Psumbook. At inference, code indices directly gather these partial sums, eliminating per-element lookups and reducing the on-chip footprint. The kernel supports the systematic exploration of latency-memory-accuracy trade-offs under a unified implementation. On Llama-3 models, CodeGEMM delivers 1.83 (8B) and 8.93 (70B) speedups in the 2-bit configuration compared to state-of-the-art codebookbased quantization at comparable accuracy and further improves computing efficiency and memory subsystem utilization.

Contextual Categorization Enhancement through LLMs Latent-Space

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Managing the semantic quality of the categorization in large textual datasets, such as Wikipedia, presents significant challenges in terms of complexity and cost. In this paper, we propose leveraging transformer models to distill semantic information from texts in the Wikipedia dataset and its associated categories into a latent space. We then explore different approaches based on these encodings to assess and enhance the semantic identity of the categories. Our graphical approach is powered by Convex Hull, while we utilize Hierarchical Navigable Small Worlds (HNSWs) for the hierarchical approach. As a solution to the information loss caused by the dimensionality reduction, we modulate the following mathematical solution: an exponential decay function driven by the Euclidean distances between the high-dimensional encodings of the textual categories. This function represents a filter built around a contextual category and retrieves items with a certain Reconsideration Probability (RP). Retrieving high-RP items serves as a tool for database administrators to improve data groupings by providing recommendations and identifying outliers within a contextual framework.

ISPA: Inter-Species Phonetic Alphabet for Transcribing Animal Sounds

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Traditionally, bioacoustics has relied on spectrograms and continuous, per-frame audio representations for the analysis of animal sounds, also serving as input to machine learning models. Meanwhile, the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) system has provided an interpretable, language-independent method for transcribing human speech sounds. In this paper, we introduce ISPA (Inter-Species Phonetic Alphabet), a precise, concise, and interpretable system designed for transcribing animal sounds into text. We compare acoustics-based and feature-based methods for transcribing and classifying animal sounds, demonstrating their comparable performance with baseline methods utilizing continuous, dense audio representations. By representing animal sounds with text, we effectively treat them as a "foreign language," and we show that established human language ML paradigms and models, such as language models, can be successfully applied to improve performance.

Estimation of the number of clusters on d-dimensional sphere

arXiv.org Machine Learning

Spherical data is distributed on the sphere. The data appears in various fields such as meteorology, biology, and natural language processing. However, a method for analysis of spherical data does not develop enough yet. One of the important issues is an estimation of the number of clusters in spherical data. To address the issue, I propose a new method called the Spherical X-means (SX-means) that can estimate the number of clusters on d-dimensional sphere. The SX-means is the model-based method assuming that the data is generated from a mixture of von Mises-Fisher distributions. The present paper explains the proposed method and shows its performance of estimation of the number of clusters.

SemanticZ at SemEval-2016 Task 3: Ranking Relevant Answers in Community Question Answering Using Semantic Similarity Based on Fine-tuned Word Embeddings

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

W e describe our system for finding good answers in a community forum, as defined in SemEval-2016, Task 3 on Community Question Answering. Our approach relies on several semantic similarity features based on fine-tuned word embeddings and topics similarities. In the main Subtask C, our primary submission was ranked third, with a MAP of 51.68 and accuracy of 69.94. In Subtask A, our primary submission was also third, with MAP of 77.58 and accuracy of 73.39.

Learning Complex Stand-Up Motion for Humanoid Robots

AAAI Conferences

In order for humanoid robots to complete various assigned tasks without any human assistance, they must have the ability to stand up on their own. In this abstract, we introduce complex stand-up motion of humanoid robots learned by using Reinforcement Learning.
