Does Incomplete Syntax Influence Korean Language Model? Focusing on Word Order and Case Markers

Syntactic elements, such as word order and case markers, are fundamental in natural language processing. Recent studies show that syntactic information boosts language model performance and offers clues for people to understand their learning mechanisms. Unlike languages with a fixed word order such as English, Korean allows for varied word sequences, despite its canonical structure, due to case markers that indicate the functions of sentence components. This study explores whether Korean language models can accurately capture this flexibility. We note that incomplete word orders and omitted case markers frequently appear in ordinary Korean communication. To investigate this further, we introduce the Syntactically Incomplete Korean (SIKO) dataset. Through SIKO, we assessed Korean language models' flexibility with incomplete syntax and confirmed the dataset's training value. Results indicate these models reflect Korean's inherent flexibility, accurately handling incomplete inputs. Moreover, fine-tuning with SIKO enhances the ability to handle common incomplete Korean syntactic forms. The dataset's simple construction process, coupled with significant performance enhancements, solidifies its standing as an effective data augmentation technique.


Morphology and Syntax of the Tamil Language

This paper provides an overview of the morphology and syntax of the Tamil language, focusing on its contemporary usage. The paper also highlights the complexity and richness of Tamil in terms of its morphological and syntactic features, which will be useful for linguists analysing the language and conducting comparative studies. In addition, the paper will be useful for those developing computational resources for the Tamil language. It is proven as a rule-based morphological analyser cum generator and a computational grammar for Tamil have already been developed based on this paper. To enhance accessibility for a broader audience, the analysis is conducted without relying on any specific grammatical formalism.


Word segmentation granularity in Korean

This paper describes word {segmentation} granularity in Korean language processing. From a word separated by blank space, which is termed an eojeol, to a sequence of morphemes in Korean, there are multiple possible levels of word segmentation granularity in Korean. For specific language processing and corpus annotation tasks, several different granularity levels have been proposed and utilized, because the agglutinative languages including Korean language have a one-to-one mapping between functional morpheme and syntactic category. Thus, we analyze these different granularity levels, presenting the examples of Korean language processing systems for future reference. Interestingly, the granularity by separating only functional morphemes including case markers and verbal endings, and keeping other suffixes for morphological derivation results in the optimal performance for phrase structure parsing. This contradicts previous best practices for Korean language processing, which has been the de facto standard for various applications that require separating all morphemes.
