California Inc.: Finally, the Marvel character in tights is a woman
Welcome to California Inc., the weekly newsletter of the L.A. Times Business Section. Investors are still digesting news that the nation's economic growth declined at the end of last year for the second straight quarter, denying President Trump the 3% annual increase he had promised his tax cuts would create. And growth this year and next won't hit that level either, economists say. Total economic output rose 2.9% in 2018. Beige Book: The latest Beige Book from the Federal Reserve comes out Wednesday.

California Inc.: Oh, like you're not jazzed about another movie featuring giant robots
Monday's Business section looks at Broadcom's scuttled deal to take over San Diego-based Qualcomm. It turns out Broadcom wildly miscalculated when it came to President Trump, who shot down what would have been the largest technology deal in history. The reverberations have only just begun. Trump dinged the deal on national security grounds -- but not because Broadcom, which is based in Singapore until it moves to the U.S. later this month, posed an immediate threat. The big worry was China, Trump's nemesis in trade.

California Inc.: The roads should be clear this holiday weekend (just kidding)
Welcome to California Inc., the weekly newsletter of the L.A. Times Business Section. Good times in the Golden State: We learned Friday that California added 31,700 net jobs in October and the state unemployment rate fell to 4.9% from 5.1% a month earlier. The latest state jobs report follows a strong September, when employers boosted payrolls by a revised 50,300. In October, the leisure and hospitality sector, and the educational and health services sector, saw the largest gains. The Automobile Club of Southern California says this year's Thanksgiving holiday will be the busiest locally since 2007, with 3.87 million residents expected to get away for the long weekend.

California Inc.: L.A. event puts urban transportation in spotlight
Welcome to California Inc., the weekly newsletter of the L.A. Times Business Section. One story stood out for me: Uber says it will introduce flying taxis in Los Angeles by 2020. "We're trying to work with cities in the early days who are interested in partnering to make it happen, while knowing that there will be pitfalls along the way," says Jeff Holden, Uber's chief product officer. Solar panels: President Trump will be presented with a plan Monday to impose restrictions and tariffs on imports of the most popular photovoltaic generating panels used in the booming U.S. residential and utility-scale solar markets. The U.S. International Trade Commission, an independent agency, has proposed the action after two international solar-panel producers with U.S. plants complained that they needed protection from low-cost imports.

California Inc.: The impact of DACA on state's agriculture industry
Welcome to California Inc., the weekly newsletter of the L.A. Times Business Section. Data breaches remain a dark cloud over the business world. On Friday, Whole Foods became the latest company to report getting hacked. Days earlier, the burger chain Sonic said it too had been hit. And Equifax continues making news with its mega-breach involving 143 million consumers.

California Inc.: A new era dawns as Whole Foods cuts some prices
Welcome to California Inc., the weekly newsletter of the L.A. Times Business Section. Traders return to business Monday after learning Friday that orders for long-lasting manufactured goods sank 6.8% in July, the biggest fall in nearly three years. Even so, manufacturers have rebounded from a slump in late 2015 and early 2016 caused by cutbacks in the energy industry and a strong dollar. Cheaper food: The impact of Amazon's purchase of Whole Foods Market will reach consumers Monday, when the high-end grocery chain begins cutting prices. Whole Foods will reduce prices on certain "bestselling staples," including bananas, salmon and organic large brown eggs.

California Inc.: Eclipse day is here, but be careful of some safety glasses
Welcome to California Inc., the weekly newsletter of the L.A. Times Business Section. But closer to home employers statewide increased their payrolls by 82,600 jobs in July. Sectors that saw the most employment gains include government, which added 18,800 jobs; educational and health services, which saw an increase of 18,600; and leisure and hospitality, which was up 15,200 jobs. California Inc.: Waze carpool app aims to redefine people's commutes
Welcome to California Inc., the weekly newsletter of the L.A. Times Business Section. Investors climb back on the bus Monday after the troubling news Friday that job growth slowed sharply in May to just 138,000, an unexpectedly lackluster figure that raises concerns about the labor market -- but probably not enough to derail an expected Federal Reserve interest rate hike this month. The unemployment rate ticked down a tenth of a percentage point to 4.3%, the lowest since 2001. Totally awesome: Marketing and design professionals will gather in Los Angeles this week for "PromaxBDA: The Conference 2017," which promises to be "100% awesome." The event will run through Thursday at the J.W. Marriott Hotel.

California Inc.: A great week to be rich and famous and flying out of LAX
Welcome to California Inc., the weekly newsletter of the L.A. Times Business Section. That tailwind Wall Streeters are feeling is Friday's news that Americans stepped up their shopping last month. The Commerce Department said retail sales increased 0.4%, suggesting consumers are poised to spur faster growth in the April-June quarter after the economy barely expanded in the first three months of the year. Consumer prices rose a modest 0.2% after a 0.3% drop in March. Above the crowd: On Monday, a new terminal aimed at celebrities and wealthy travelers will open at Los Angeles International Airport.
