Yelp's new AI features include auto-generated business summaries, among other updates

Engadget

Yelp just released a substantial app update with more than 20 new features, and several of these tools are packed with, wait for it, AI. The biggest news for regular users is the addition of summaries of business automatically written by AI, which Yelp says will help people find the perfect restaurant or service to meet their needs. There's also new visuals for the home feed and revamped search experience, which the company says will also help users find that perfect dinner spot. This home feed incorporates AI to provide more relevant content to users and will also display images from nearby restaurants that match previous user queries, in addition to videos posted by local businesses. The AI tomfoolery extends to business users.

Government watchdog asks Missouri AG to investigate MSU business boot camp that excluded White males

FOX News

Fox News contributor Joe Concha joins'Fox & Friends First' to discuss Elon Musk's warning that artificial intelligence could threaten elections and his concerns on the declining birth rate. A government watchdog group Tuesday requested that Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey investigate a tax-payer-funded Missouri State University business boot program that excluded White males. In a letter to Bailey's office, the Equal Protection Project (EPP) alleged that Missouri State University (MSU) was "engaging in racial- and gender-based discrimination through its sponsorship, promotion, and hosting of a small business training'boot camp' that limits participation" to women and people who identify as "BIPOC" – an acronym for non-white "Black, Indigenous and Persons of Color." MSU began accepting applications for the Spring 2023 Early-Stage Business Boot Camp program in late November. The university said the program was for "aspiring or current BIPOC and/or women small business owners who have recently started or are in the idea phase" and live in Southern Missouri.

It sounds like science fiction but it's not: AI can financially destroy your business

#artificialintelligence

Everyone seems to be worried about the potential impact of artificial intelligence (AI) these days. Even technology leaders including Elon Musk and the Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak have signed a public petition urging OpenAI, the makers of the conversational chatbot ChatGPT, to suspend development for six months so it can be "rigorously audited and overseen by independent outside experts". Their concerns about the impact AI may have on humanity in the future are justified – we are talking some serious Terminator stuff, without a Schwarzenegger to save us. Unfortunately, there's AI that's being used right now which is already starting to have a big impact – even financially destroy – businesses and individuals. So much so that the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) felt the need to issue a warning about an AI scam which, according to this NPR report "sounds like a plot from a science fiction story".

Will AI be bigger than the internet? How one Utah lawmaker is thinking about the future

#artificialintelligence

Editor's note: This is part of a KSL.com series looking at the rise of artificial intelligence technology tools such as ChatGPT, the opportunities and risks they pose and what impacts they could have on various aspects of our daily lives. SALT LAKE CITY -- Like all lawmakers in Utah's citizen Legislature, House Majority Whip Jefferson Moss spends most of the year working a day job. Moss, a Republican from Saratoga Springs, has a background in venture capital and technology, so he was quick to see the potential for artificially intelligent chatbots like ChatGPT when it was released last November. And while government as a whole can be slow to adopt new technology, Moss already sees recent breakthroughs in AI technology as huge leaps forward. "I've been following different iterations of AI, but when ChatGPT came out, it really was a game-changer," Moss told KSL.com in March.

How automation can streamline and reduce bias in the funding process

#artificialintelligence

Over time, the route to external financing has become a standardized, inefficient process. Founders will go to venture capitalists or wealthy'angels', map out their vision and ask for funding in return for a stake in the business. Investors will do their own research and deals will always hinge on subjectivity. Entrepreneurs must persuade investors that their company mission warrants backing and that they, as individuals, are capable of making it a reality. Despite the advanced technologies and sectors that investors bankroll, these existing methods are outdated and not fit for purpose.

New Orleans nonprofit runs largest network of community crime cameras

FOX News

With fewer officers on the streets, a Louisiana nonprofit is using security cameras to put more eyes on high-crime areas. NEW ORLEANS – In a two-story building at the University of New Orleans, over 10,000 video feeds from communities across the country are streaming at the speed of light. A small staff is watching these feeds, studying gang members and tracking drug deals in small towns and major cities. It's called Project NOLA, the largest network of community crime cameras in the U.S., and the only nonprofit in the security industry. "Just like the Red Cross and CrimeStoppers, we are in the business of helping people," said Executive Director Bryan Lagarde.
