The last console generation was all about black plastic rectangles. The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 looked like sleek, futuristic VCRs. It was not an exciting or inspired vibe. This console generation, Sony and Microsoft are leaning into their respective aesthetics. Microsoft's Xbox Series X is bigger and squarer than ever before. The PlayStation 5 is more radical.

As a new generation of video game consoles arrives, many have wondered whether the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will actually feel "next gen"--that is to say, markedly better. New console generations used to mark major leaps in performance, fidelity and ways of playing (think of the graphical leap from the NES to the Super Nintendo, or the jump to 3-D games with the original PlayStation). All this was on my mind when I first fired up the PlayStation 5.

After months of speculation, we now have a clear picture of how the next generation of consoles is shaping up. Four consoles at three price points, each offering a slightly different take on the future of gaming. At just $300, the Xbox Series S is clearly the value proposition. You won't get true 4K gaming, and its 512GB of storage could prove an issue, but that's the price you pay for.. paying less. At $400, the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition offers everything the regular PlayStation 5 does, except the disc drive.
