This essay was adapted from Phil Christman's newsletter, the Tourist. Before 2023, my teaching year used to follow a predictable emotional arc. In September, I was always excited, not only about meeting a new crop of first-year writing students but even about the prep work. My lesson-planning sessions would take longer than intended and yet leave me feeling energized. I'd look forward to conference week--the one-on-one meetings I try to hold with every student, every term, at least once--and even to the first stack of papers.

Reviews are in for a tiny 700 wearable computer, less than 2 square-inches in size, made by two former Apple employees who promised a breakthrough'iPhone killer.' And they haven't been kind: Humane's AI Pin has been called'The Worst Product I've Ever Reviewed' garnering low 4-out-of-10 scored from major tech publications. The device -- which is worn on the user's lapel, answers spoken commands via AI, and projects a tiny screen onto their hand -- has been criticized for hardware that overheats in just'a couple of minutes,' AI that delivers'incorrect answers' and worse. Now, Humane's employees and engineers have admitted that the AI Pin, which also requires a 24 monthly subscription plan, is'frustrating sometimes' and that the harsh reviews have been'honest' and'solid.' It's yet to be seen if the public will prefer tapping an object on their chest as opposed to pulling their phone out of their pocket Some tech industry boosters lashed out at influential YouTuber reviewer Marques Brownlee, whose negative review of the AI Pin has 3.7 million views, accusing him of'carelessness' for'potentially killing someone else's nascent project' with his critique.

It's a problem that drives the parents of most teenagers mad. But clothes piled up on the bedroom floor may soon be a problem of the past as scientists have developed a cleaning robot to pick up dirty laundry. Scientists from UC Berkeley say their clothes-collecting bot solves the'Teenagers Problem; of how to most efficiently pick up mess. Using a combination of colour and depth-sensing cameras the robot collects laundry into piles before finding the best place to grab the clothes. Professor Ken Goldberg, the study's lead author, says that this technology could become commercially available in the decade, meaning we may soon all have a robotic helper around the house.

It's been widely touted as a replacement for the smartphone, but it seems Humane's AI Pin isn't quite so smart after all. In a promotional video released to launch the product, the device made not just one, but two blunders. In the video, founders Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno asked the device seemingly simple questions. Embarrassingly, the $699 (£564) AI Pin incorrectly identified the best location to view the next solar eclipse, as well as the nutritional value of a handful of almonds. In an embarrassing back-step, the company has now released an edited version of the video, and claims the errors were the result of a'glitch.'
