The best game about an unhinged goose is just 7 on Steam right now

PCWorld

Back in 2019, an indie game launched with a simple tagline: "It's a lovely morning in the village and you are a horrible goose." And Untitled Goose Game tells no lies. This one sentence describes its premise accurately. I tell everyone to play it. I've been especially vocal during the past week, when its price on Steam dropped to its all-time low of just 7 for the second time ever.

AI Slop Is Ripping Off One of Summer's Best Games. Copycats Are Proving Hard to Kill

WIRED

Peak is this summer's finest co-op game. The game, created in partnership with developers Aggro Crab and Landfall as part of a game jam, is currently in Steam's top five bestsellers. It sold over a million copies in its first week, and has now surpassed 8 million, according to Aggro Crab cofounder Nick Kamen. Now, as a result of its success, says Kamen, scammers are selling cheap, AI-made versions of it wherever they can. "We hate to see it," says Kamen.

The Morning After: The best games of 2023

It was an amazing year for games. That's reflected in many of our picks for best games of the year, with several PC-only choices. The year kicked off with a fantastic remake of space horror Dead Space and the breakout success, Pizza Tower. But there were so many more.

Microsoft Reportedly Made An AI That Plays Minecraft For You

#artificialintelligence

Much of the science fiction genre would have you believe that artificial intelligence would bring about humanity's downfall by rising up and slaughtering its creators, but the recent boom in AI tech has instead amounted to labor crimes like journalistic malpractice and robbing artists of their commissions. So while AI is mostly being used to make creatives obsolete, Microsoft is apparently doing internal testing on a demo that makes AI essentially play Minecraft for you. According to a report from Semafor, the demo recently showcased technology that allowed the user to simply tell Minecraft what to do, and it would move your character, collect materials, and more based on your directions.. Minecraft's open-ended nature has apparently presented somewhat of a challenge for the tech, however, as there are multiple ways to accomplish a task in Mojang's game. The example given in the report is building a car in Minecraft, which can be done in myriad ways depending on what supplies you have on-hand. So saying something broad like "build a car" would likely not get you as precise an in-game action as "build a car out of stone blocks."

The 10 Best and Cruelest Games of 2022

WIRED

In 2022, the best games were made for masochists. After several years of boom times for wholesome stories and colorful worlds, 2022 reminded us that sometimes there's no truer form of fun than failing horribly, repeatedly. FromSoftware often leads that charge, thanks to series like Dark Souls. This year, it rose to its own challenge. Elden Ring, maddening in its difficulty and unusually cruel in its creative ways to kill you, took center stage as players picked apart its every secret.

The best games of 2022 so far

The Guardian

This clever, shareable word game was the feelgood story of the early part of the year, as mysterious coloured-block emojis proliferated across social feeds and half the planet was drawn into guessing the word of the day. Wordle mania might have dissipated a little since the New York Times took it over, but it'll still be a defining game of 2022. What we said: "The simplicity is the charm. One Wordle is released each day, and it's the same one for everyone around the world. There are no advertisements, no niggling notifications begging you to return each morning, no novelty skins … the game's rejection of the capitalistic systems that define so many video games today has a refreshing, innocent quality. Long may Wordle remain so pure."

The Best Games Have the Smartest Learning Curves

WIRED

It seems like nothing is more controversial in the gaming world than difficulty. Everyone has a strong opinion on the topic, usually falling along one of two lines: One, that games should be playable for people at any skill level, or two, that anyone who wants to call themselves a gamer needs to have the stamina to prevail. There is, however, another way of looking at this debate, one that keeps games accessible to less experienced players but doesn't make them too easy for those looking to be challenged: smart learning curves. All games have some form of learning curve, naturally, but there is a way of building them that doesn't leave quite so many people in the position of dying all the time with no idea why; one that--through smart design--teaches them the game's mechanics and maneuvers even as they screw up. I die, on average, once every 10 minutes or so when I'm playing it, yet after five hours of game time I'm still having too much fun to stop.

Rocksteady delays 'Suicide Squad' game to 2023

Engadget

You'll have to wait a while longer to slay Superman. Rocksteady Studios has delayed Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League from sometime in 2022 to spring 2023. Company co-founder Sefton Hill didn't explain the decision, but promised the extra time would be used to "make the best game" possible. The title has Harley Quinn, King Shark and other Suicide Squad villians fight mind-controlled superheroes like Superman and The Flash as they cause chaos. Rocksteady hasn't shown gameplay, but Kill the Justice League will be available for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
