Carrying your own luggage may soon be a thing of the past, thanks to a few mad scientists obsessed with making your life more convenient. On Sunday, at a preview event at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the tech company ForwardX Robotics unveiled its latest creation: the CX-1. The CX-1 may look like your average suitcase, but what's inside makes it anything but. According to UberGizmo, the suitcase contains sensors that will track its owner anywhere he or she goes. It will then follow them like a well-trained dog using its four-wheel-drive system, avoiding any speed bumps along the way thanks to its 170-degree, wide angle camera.

Tesla is close to testing a prototype driverless electric truck in California and Nevada, leaked emails have revealed. The long haul semi-trucks will drive themselves and move in'platoons' that automatically follow a lead vehicle. The plans were revealed in a discussion of potential road tests between Elon Musk's firm and the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). California officials are also meeting with Tesla on Wednesday'to talk about Tesla's efforts with autonomous trucks,' DMV spokeswoman Jessica Gonzalez told Reuters. Tesla is close to testing a prototype autonomous electric truck (teaser image pictured), leaked emails have revealed.

Air travelers with disabilities will have a much easier time navigating one of Japan's main airports, thanks to new smart wheel chairs. Haneda Airport outside Tokyo is beginning tests of the WHILL NEXT, an app-controlled self-driving wheel chair that can take users around the airport and even bring their luggage in a separate wireless vehicle behind them. It is hoped the system will be in place, alongside new smart billboards and navigation apps, in time for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Designed specifically for navigating crowded areas, the smart wheel chair also has several other features that make it perfect for airports, such as the ability to link to sensor-equipped luggage carts that automatically follow the wheelchair without getting lost. The WHILL NEXT uses sensors and image recognition to detect obstacles and navigate the airport.

Japanese researchers, never at a loss for concepts mashing up domestic and medical care with the best in robotics, has developed a robotic wheelchair that automatically follows a human companion. Born of Saitama University's Human-Robot Interaction Center, the wheelchair employs a distance sensor that tracks the position of a companion person, keeping the wheelchair always at the person's left. It also tracks the position of the companion's shoulders, anticipating where that person is moving next. Even if the companion stand in place and simply rotates, the chair will circle around to remain abreast of the companion. Unless, that is, the corridor narrows or other foot traffic is approaching or there is an obstacle or a narrow corridor.
