How Microsoft's experiment in artificial intelligence tech backfired

#artificialintelligence

Microsoft's chatbot has gone rogue. NPR's Bobby Allyn reports on how this experiment in artificial intelligence tech backfired. BOBBY ALLYN, BYLINE: Matt O'Brien is a technology reporter for the Associated Press. He was testing out Microsoft's new Bing earlier this month. It's the first-ever search engine powered by AI.

Ukraine Uses 'Controversial' Artificial Intelligence Tech In Its War Against Russia As Kiev Looks To Win The 'Digital War'

#artificialintelligence

The conflict between Ukraine and Russia has demonstrated how technology may play a significant role in modern warfare. While Ukraine’s military force isn’t as strong as Russia’s, it does employ cutting-edge technology to its advantage.  It has been observed that Kyiv is aggressively utilizing social media to weaken Putin’s forces’ morale. However, it does not […]

Artificial intelligence tech can help patient backlog

#artificialintelligence

Hospitals and private practices are seeing an increase in patients. They said that, however, is not a bad thing. Patients are returning for diagnostic procedures, surgeries, and health screenings that were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "During the early part of the pandemic, our patients volume really decreased dramatically," said Adam Trybus, chief radiologist at 611 MRI in Altoona. "Patients were postponing routine care. They were only coming in for emergencies."

Artificial Intelligence tech to set world record for producing algae for biofuel : Biofuels Digest

#artificialintelligence

In Texas, Texas A&M AgriLife Research scientists are using artificial intelligence to set a new world record for producing algae as a reliable, economic source for biofuel that can be used as an alternative fuel source for jet aircraft and other transportation needs. Joshua Yuan, AgriLife Research scientist, professor and chair of Synthetic Biology and Renewable Products in the Texas A&M College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology, is leading the research project. "The commercialization of algal biofuel has been hindered by the relatively low yield and high harvesting cost," Yuan said. "The limited light penetration and poor cultivation dynamics both contributed to the low yield." Overcoming these challenges could enable viable algal biofuels to reduce carbon emissions, mitigate climate change, alleviate petroleum dependency and transform the bioeconomy, Yuan said.

Artificial intelligence tech could improve cervical cancer diagnoses, UK experts say

#artificialintelligence

A UK hospital is piloting technology using artificial intelligence and advanced imaging to improve early diagnosis of cervical cancer. University Hospital Monklands in Airdrie said it has become the first hospital in the UK and one of the first in the world to pilot the technology as part of its cervical screening programme. Health experts said the new technology could be instrumental in ensuring earlier detection of pre-cancerous cells and cancer cells and has the potential to save lives. The pilot is using a digital cytology system, the GeniusTM Digital Diagnostics System, from women's health company Hologic. For the pilot programme the system will create digital images of cervical smear slides from samples that have tested positive for Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).

UN calls for moratorium on Artificial Intelligence tech that threatens human rights- Technology News, Firstpost

#artificialintelligence

The UN called Wednesday for a moratorium on artificial intelligence systems like facial recognition technology that threaten human rights until "guardrails" are in place against violations. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet warned that "AI technologies can have negative, even catastrophic effects if they are used without sufficient regard to how they affect people's human rights." She called for assessments of how great a risk various AI technologies pose to things like rights to privacy and freedom of movement and of expression. Faulty AI tools have led to people being unfairly denied social security benefits, while innocent people have been arrested due to flawed facial recognition. She said countries should ban or heavily regulate the ones that pose the greatest threats.

Sponsored Roundtable: Artificial Intelligence Tech - AI Summary

#artificialintelligence

Learn how AI innovation is leading to broader market adoption, and how security integrators can take advantage of the trends. Back in 2017, when use and hype of the Artificial Intelligence buzzword really hit the security industry, we wrote: "The uphill climb for today's video surveillance and other manufacturers, who are tasked with integrating and then marketing AI to security integrators and end-users, is how to dispel the pre-conceived perceptions of what Artificial Intelligence really is." This exclusive trends roundtable sponsored by Tyco American Dynamics takes a closer look at this struggle, as well as other aspects of AI technology adoption, with Johnson Controls/Tyco Security Products Manager Jammy DeSousa, as well as veteran integrator Eric Yunag, VP of Technology & Innovation for Convergint Technologies. AI – or better stated, computer vision – can leverage ground truth and sample data to train machine learning models to recognize very specific scene elements or, more importantly, behavioral elements. As technology advances, a VMS without AI will not only become obsolete, but ineffective compared to a VMS that deploys AI features.
