Artificial intelligence key to Bristlebird recovery

#artificialintelligence

Experts across multiple states and regions are working on cutting edge science like'call recognition' software to help the shy and elusive Eastern Bristlebird recover the devastating Black Summer bushfires. The state-of-the-art deep learning AI pattern recognition tool is one of eight new recovery projects that have received funding through the Morrison Government's multiregional species coordinator. Minister for the Environment Sussan Ley said the projects will cover a range of recovery actions including the use of scientific surveys to record sightings of the birds to improve understanding of subpopulations and habitat connectivity. "Eastern Bristlebirds are a very secretive bird but can be easily recognised by their melodic song and alarm-call, which is why we are developing new listening tools to support the identification and recovery of this endangered species," Minister Ley said. "By creating a tool that automatically and accurately detects the bird's calls from remote field recordings, and updating radio-transmitter attachment methods, we will be able to track remaining and translocated populations to support their recovery in the future. "We will also be using highly-skilled volunteer scientists to collect data that will inform the future recovery actions we need to take to support the recovery of the Bristlebird across its entire range." Other projects for the Eastern Bristlebird will focus on enhancing recovery through habitat restoration, health and disease research, and support for the establishment of a new genetically viable population in Victoria as a safety net in case of extreme weather events or the spread of disease. "One of the key learnings from the Black Summer bushfires was a need for coordinated on-ground action, monitoring and research, across the entire range of a species, to support its recovery," Minister Ley added. "That is why the Australian Government's $200 million investment in bushfire recovery for wildlife and their habitats is seeing states, territories and stakeholders continuing to work together to support the recovery of ecosystems over a year on from the devastating bushfires.

UAE Press: Artificial intelligence key to UAE's growth

#artificialintelligence

ABU DHABI, 24th August, 2020 (WAM) -- A UAE daily has said that the world is facing many challenges as it fights the global coronavirus pandemic, noting that full-on efforts are being made around the world to find a solution to the coronavirus. "One such method of curbing the virus is through the use of artificial intelligence, AI" said Gulf Today in an editorial on Monday, quoting Dr. Mohammad Yaqub, Assistant Professor at MBZUAI and research fellow at the University of Oxford, as highlighting the role of AI in the current fight against COVID-19 and how it can be applied to help identify future pandemics and halt their spread," The newspaper added, "The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need to be prepared for high-impact disruptive events. AI and academic research are proving to be important tools in overcoming the coronavirus and future pandemic mitigation. "AI can predict future infections; facilitate healthcare solutions; accelerate research to understand and treat COVID-19, and even predict the impact of government policy decisions." During a webinar, Dr. Yaqub said that AI could make post-pandemic recovery quicker, easier and more robust.

Artificial Intelligence Key to Fighting Pandemics

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence is proving to be an integral part of the fight against the ongoing COVID-19 crisis and may also aid in battling future pandemics, according to researchers from a high-profile AI commission. "The early months of the pandemic response suggest that technology -- some of it underpinned by artificial intelligence -- offers powerful potential for detecting and containing the virus, driving biomedical innovation -- including for vaccines and therapeutics -- and improving response and recovery," said a new white paper by the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence. The panel -- which was established by the fiscal year 2019 National Defense Authorization Act -- was tasked by Congress to research ways to advance the development of AI for defense purposes. In the report titled, "The Role of AI Technology in Pandemic Response and Preparedness: Recommended Investments and Initiatives," the authors called for a number of focused spending efforts and projects that could help the United States capitalize on AI capabilities during pandemics, as well as maintain military readiness. Already, the Pentagon has a number of initiatives examining such tools.

Is Artificial Intelligence key to the search for truth about alien life?

#artificialintelligence

Scientists have been looking for signs of life in different realms of our solar system. Even though we are yet to find a certain answer about the existence of alien life, several advanced Artificial Intelligence tools have been developed with a promise of finding the truth. However, scientists are now suggesting that these rovers and robots that we have relied on for years, might become the cause of inaccurate results. According to Independent, the latest study suggests that AI could trick us into believing that we have discovered aliens. This is simply because just like humans, machines are prone to cognitive biases and misidentification, which may convince us to believe that any object detected is aliens or living organisms on Mars.

Artificial intelligence key to Africa's future food security - Farmers Review Africa

#artificialintelligence

The cumulative view provided by the confluence of machine learning and decision making in conjunction with third-party data all hosted in the cloud, has given rise to artificial intelligence (AI) in agriculture. The ability of agricultural equipment to think, predict and even advise farmers presents Africa with an historic opportunity to meet the continent's own food requirements. AI also presents Africa with the capability to integrate its agricultural sector into global agricultural value chains. According to GeoFarm South Africa, farms in the United States are 27% more productive than South African farms compared across the same area, moisture levels and soil types. While, superficially, this is because farms in the United States are more mechanised, a closer examination of what these agricultural machines are doing shows just how fundamentally AI has changed the way humans farm, and how dramatically these changes have increased agricultural yields.

Artificial intelligence key to do 'more with less' in securing enterprise cloud services ZDNet

#artificialintelligence

Security professionals in the enterprise are facing an uphill battle to maintain control of corporate networks. Data breaches and cyberattacks are rampant, sensitive information belonging to both companies and individuals is spilling unchecked into the underbelly of the Internet, and with the emergence of state-sponsored threat actors, it is becoming more and more difficult for organizations to keep up. It is estimated the cyberattacks and online threats will cost businesses up to $6 trillion annually by 2021, up from $3 trillion in 2015. Once cyberattackers compromise an enterprise network or cloud service, information can be stolen, surveillance may be conducted, or in some cases, ransomware attacks can lock down an entire operation and hold a business to ransom. However, new technologies are entering the cybersecurity space which may help reduce the financial cost and burden on cybersecurity professionals pressed for time and often operating with limited staff and budgets.

Artificial Intelligence key in eradication to disability: Experts

#artificialintelligence

Islamabad - Artificial Intelligence is playing a key role in eradication of disability in people. However, Pakistan needs to change its outlook on Disability through far-reaching and persistent legal and social reforms, said experts on Thursday. STRIVE is a non-profit organisation working to eradicate disability in Pakistan. To achieve this goal, STRIVE has given the Vision 2025 – A World Free of Disability. Vision 2025 employs a multi-pronged approach of a) campaigning to raise awareness, b) introducing projects to effect policy change, and c) providing on-ground medical treatment and physiotherapy. 'Eradication' of disability is a goal that is becoming more achievable than ever with the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Artificial Intelligence Key To Treating Illness

#artificialintelligence

Complex computer software may be the key to correctly diagnosing and treating patients with various diseases. Dr. Nick Ernest, a UC graduate who beat the Air Force in a simulated game of aerial combat with his artificial intelligence (AI) system, is now applying the concept to the human body. In a proof of concept study, Ernest harnessed the power of his Psibernetix AI program to determine if bipolar patients could benefit from a certain medication. Using fMRIs of bipolar patients, the software looked at how each patient would react to lithium. The computer software predicted with 100 percent accuracy how patients would respond.
