How High School Should Change for an Era of AI and Robots

#artificialintelligence

Public high school in America was the product of the time of its invention, which was way back in 1821. But in this era of rapid technological change marked by artificial intelligence and robots moving into more aspects of work and social life, maybe the way teaching is done in high school needs a reboot. It is framed around the thought experiment: What would an ideal high school of the year 2040 look like? The tour guides of this imagined school of the future are two authors: Jim Tracy, a senior advisor at the nonprofit Jobs for the Future who in his career has led private K-12 schools and served as a college president; and Greg Toppo, longtime education journalist. They instead focus on how coming technological change will end up shifting the relationship between people and machines, and therefore between students and teachers.

The Fearmongers Are Wrong about Artificial Intelligence and Robots

Thanks to the recent efforts of such figures as Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang and British Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell, the issue of Universal Basic Income (UBI) has been back at the forefront of the public discussion on economic issues, along with the various arguments and justifications for introducing such a policy. While many of these justifications have become quite familiar over the years of waxing and waning interest in UBI, it is interesting to note the recent surge of interest in one particular argument, which sounds more like something from a science fiction novel than an economics textbook. This argument runs roughly as follows: In the not too distant future, rapidly advancing technology will allow robots and artificial intelligence (AI) to perform many of the jobs now being done by humans and to do so more cheaply and efficiently than humans ever could. This will result in robots/AI replacing humans in almost all jobs, making the vast majority of people permanently unemployed, and without Universal Basic Income, how will they (the people) be able to keep food on their tables? Of course, the idea that advances in labor-saving technology will lead to catastrophic unemployment and declining living standards is hardly new, arguably dating back to ancient Greece or earlier, and economists (not to mention the facts of history) have been refuting the idea for nearly as long as economics has existed as a self-conscious science.

"Old-fashioned" is generally not a term you want to hear applied to science fiction, a genre from which one tends to expect the futuristic and unfamiliar. But old-fashioned is very much how Finch (Apple TV) feels, and not just because of the reassuring elder-statesman presence of Tom Hanks in the title role: a post-apocalyptic drama built from the scraps of a thousand others before it, it's about as nostalgically cuddly as a vision of a barren, desolate future can be. Hanks is seemingly the last surviving human on the planet; an inventor, he assembles an AI robot (voiced by Caleb Landry Jones) to mind his adorable dog when he's gone. The narrative direction of the film, previously a more downbeat enterprise, was altered to be more optimistic when the global pandemic struck. Perhaps Finch's creation, a throwback to the rickety robot aesthetics of 1980s kids' favourite Short Circuit, was always intended to be a hi-tech pet-sitter: either way, in the long history of cinema's fascination with artificial intelligence (AI), rarely has the technology been used to such wholesome ends.

Tech News: 2021 the year of artificial intelligence and robots

#artificialintelligence

Looking back, 2020 and the Covid-19 pandemic has been extremely difficult and disruptive to business and our personal lives. However, 2020 was not only deleterious – at least not with regard to technology. In many technology fields progress has accelerated significantly. Two of these areas are artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics, which will play a prominent role in 2021 and following years. Over the last few years AI has grown in importance in a wide variety of fields such as healthcare, bioscience, education, transport, marketing, finance, cybersecurity and many more.

How Frankenstein Is Always Exploited In Trying To Stir Up Technology Fears

#artificialintelligence

Considering the interest and discussions about artificial intelligence (AI), one would like to think that humanity is on the verge of destruction. From enslavement to complete extinction, everything happens, but almost no consideration of the reasons why we develop AI at all and what we use it for. Although this kind of one-sided approach to a technology is not unique to AI, it is precisely with artificial intelligence and robots that we seem to reach a new level of hysteria. The negative spiral is not only intensified by the most popular opinion leaders, who often lack any technical background – and are often even proud to present it – but have long curly hair. Unfortunately, too few AI experts make appearances in the public discourse.

Artificial intelligence and Robots are far more capable than humans and your job may be on the line

#artificialintelligence

Yes, it is indeed one of the most burning paradoxes of modern times. Do you really have to fear the fact that artificial intelligence (AI) will snatch away your only way to livelihood? Well, both history and facts says a different story. The way I see it, here is humanity's best shot to dedicate all mundane and repetitive tasks to bots while we can engage ourselves into something more creative that would further the cause of the business. If you are a pizza delivery boy in London, you don't have to worry for a second about your job loss when you see, the self-driving robots doing the delivery.

The Amazing Ways Samsung Is Using Big Data, Artificial Intelligence And Robots To Drive Performance

Forbes - Tech

Until recently, Korean company Samsung was said to behind its competitors in terms of researching and developing artificial intelligence (AI) technology, but the company's recent strategy suggests that it's committed to closing the gap and even competing for the top spot. Since 70 percent of the world's data is produced and stored on Samsung's products, the company is the leading provider of data storage products in the world. By revenue, Samsung is the largest consumer electronics company in the world--yes, it has even overtaken Apple and sells 500 million connected devices a year. From industry events to setting goals with AI at the forefront to updating products to use artificial intelligence, Samsung seems to have gone full throttle in preparing for the 4th industrial revolution. Samsung started 2018 with intention to be an artificial intelligence leader by organizing the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Summit and brought together 300 university students, technical experts and leading academics to explore ways to accelerate AI research and to develop the best commercial applications of AI.

Artificial Intelligence and Robots: Fact vs. Fiction - Cray

#artificialintelligence

From tin-can robots to sophisticated, sentient virtual environments, artificial intelligence (AI) is a dominant theme in science fiction. With real-world advances in machine learning and deep learning, the gap between fact and fiction is narrowing. From Siri, search engines and motion-sensing video games to medical imaging and diagnostics, artificial intelligence is an increasingly significant part of our lives. Cray systems are used every day to solve artificial intelligence problems through machine learning and deep learning approaches. In this three-part blog series, we'll look at a few examples of AI in sci-fi and see how they match up with reality. Robots -- especially humanoid robots -- are often the first thing that comes to mind when we think about artificial intelligence.

Stephen Fry describing our future with artificial intelligence and robots

#artificialintelligence

In a beautiful monologue of 6 minutes Stephen Fry takes us all the way back to ancient Greek Mythology (Prometheus, Pandora) and then via the world wide web towards a future in which we (the new gods) give life to a new species. Robots will enter our world, but will we give them, or deny them their "fire"?

How artificial intelligence and robots will create jobs

#artificialintelligence

Advances in robotics and artificial intelligence in China are expected to create more employment opportunities than job losses, a report by the British recruitment company Michael Page says. The report was based on responses from 1,026 employees in the manufacturing, sales, marketing, finance and accounting industries. About 84 per cent of the respondents said they are not anxious about being replaced by robots, and 58 per cent said robots and AI will create more opportunities in the labour market. Peter Smith, managing director of Michael Page China, said such technology advances will allow people to take on more innovative jobs. This is especially true for hi-tech projects such as driverless cars propelled by new technologies as more highly skilled people would be needed to invent and develop allied products.
