Denmark's top military chief dismissed after incident involving ship deployed to Red Sea

FOX News

Fox News chief national security correspondent Jennifer Griffin reports on how autonomous weapons used in Ukraine have transformed the battlefield on'Special Report.' A series of scandals has blighted Denmark's Armed Forces at a time when the Scandinavian country and member of the NATO alliance is building up its defenses, chiefly as a response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The events have so far led to the dismissal this week of Denmark's top military chief, Gen. Flemming Lentfer, who failed to inform the defense minister about an incident on the frigate HDMS Iver Huitfeldt last month while deployed to the Red Sea, where it was part of a U.S.-led operation to defend commercial shipping against Houthi militants. On Thursday, a technical error onboard its sister ship, the frigate HDMS Niels Juel that was docked in a Danish harbor, led to the air space and maritime route being briefly closed due to fears a navy missile might launch unintentionally -- but not explode -- and send fragments falling into the busy shipping lane between the islands of Zeeland, where Copenhagen sits, and Funen. The Iver Huitfeldt, which returned from its Red Sea mission on Thursday, ahead of schedule, reportedly experienced a half-hour long malfunction of its missile and radar systems during a drone attack on March 9, according to the specialist defense news website Olfi.

The General Directorate of Armaments awards the Tornado contract to the Preligens scale up - Actu IA

The French defense procurement agency (DGA) has awarded Preligens a seven-year contract worth around €240 million. Named TORNADE (Traitement Optique et Radar par Neurones Artificiels via Détecteurs), it involves the acquisition of software licenses for AI solutions for processing and exploiting large amounts of data, and will benefit in particular the Ministry of Defence's joint intelligence function. Today, there is a huge amount of data coming from sensors, spy satellites, commercial satellites, drones or airplanes, and humans are struggling to process it quickly enough to enable authorities to make the right decisions quickly. The current geopolitical context shows how crucial it is for governments and military ministries to be reactive and the importance of satellite images. Preligens' AI image processing technology fully meets these needs.

Good News Roundup: the OSINT-inspired Geek Edition

#artificialintelligence

In this week's geeked-out edition of the Good News Roundup, Ukraine's jaw-dropping battlefield victories with HIMARS are documented using OSINT, South Africa implements AI technology to track dangerous locust swarms, biologists and naturalists overwhelmingly agree that gay sex is normal throughout the animal kingdom, and BirdNet proves reliable at crowdsourcing the task of identifying wild birds by their songs. In wholesome news for sci fi/space fantasy fans everywhere, Ukraine's president Zelensky continues attending technology trade shows through holograms in which he promises that Ukraine will defeat the Empire. Ukrainians are also using 3d imaging technology to preserve the cultural heritage of their country from looters and bombs, storing their data in a digital archive that will support restoration work when the invaders have been defeated. And in good news for new Ukrainian parents, the non-profit Embrace Global is making headlines for using innovative technology to provide incubators for babies in Ukraine at a tiny fraction of their usual cost. You can see their TED talk by entrepreneur Jane Chen here.

Combating terrorism through artificial intelligence

#artificialintelligence

Terrorists from across the borders entering India are often exploiting weaknesses in border infrastructure and use technology and cyberspace to create technology to propagate their thinking.crimes. And are continuously supported from beyond the Indian borders, primarily misusing modern technology for funding or Command and Control purposes. Prevention of violent extremism in India is an important and necessary requirement for the country. Such efforts need multi-dimensional coordination between Armed Forces and various National law enforcement agencies. Today's asymmetric warfare requires newer tools and techniques to keep pace with the changing times.

Britain will NOT develop AI robot weapons because they are 'unethical'

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Britain will not develop Terminator-style machines which can kill without human command because they are unethical, the chief scientist at the Ministry of Defence said. Countries worldwide are in a new arms race to develop lethal autonomous weapons (LAWS) which can kill in a war zone without a person having to push a button. But this has sparked major fears that some countries could develop a fleet of killer robots which are not reined in by humans. Simon Cholerton, the MoD's chief scientific adviser, has revealed that Britain is'doing no work and has no plans to develop fully automated weapons'. He said that Britain will snub the new technological field even if the UK's Armed Forces are put at a disadvantage on the battlefield, because it is immoral.

Defence Ministry to rope in industry to leverage Artificial Intelligence

#artificialintelligence

The Defence Ministry will soon come up with a detailed roadmap on working closely with the industry on leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) -- latest technology that emphasises on creation of intelligent machines that work and react like humans -- in Armed Forces, said Ajay Kumar, Secretary, Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence. A task force, headed by Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran to study use and application of AI in military, recently gave its recommendations, which has been converted into a Draft Executive Order. Consultation is underway with different wings of the Defence Ministry on this, he said at a CII conference on Aerospace & Defence Manufacturing Technologies on the Theme: Fostering a Competitive, Innovative and Robust Industry. "AI is a big driver in all our platforms. We have already asked Defence PSUs to come up with suggestions as to where they can start leveraging in AI. Developing AI capabilities is absolutely essential part of leading the next generation innovation thrust," he said.

Kick–starting AI in Armed Forces - SP's MAI

News reports of May 20, 2018 have reported the government has embarked upon an ambitious defence project for incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance operational preparedness of the armed forces in a significant way. The project is to include equipping the military with unmanned tanks, vessels, aerial vehicles and robotic weaponry. The DRDO has been talking of preparing the military for robotic warfare for past several years but without much to show on ground other than few applications. DRDO's Centre for Artificial Intelligence & Robotics (CAIR) has developed a range of robots with varied applications, and is also developing: man portable Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) for low intensity conflicts and surveillance in urban scenario; wall climbing and flapping wing robot; walking robot with four and six legs for logistics support; Network Traffic Analysis (NETRA) which can monitor internet traffic. But considering the pace at which developments are taking place, particularly in China in combining robotics and AI, our slow progress in this field is liable to leave us at huge asymmetric disadvantage.

Artificial intelligence and intelligence

As was also clearly stated by Vladimir Putin on September 4, 2017: "whichever country leads the way in Artificial Intelligence research will be the ruler of the world". According to Thomas Kuhn's old, but still useful, epistemological model, every change of the scientific paradigm – rather than the emergence of new material discoveries – radically changes the visions of the world and hence strategic equilibria. Hence, first of all, what is Artificial Intelligence? It consists of a series of mathematical tools, but also of psychology, electronic technology, information technology and computer science tools, through which a machine is taught to think as if it were a human being, but with the speed and security of a computer. The automatic machine must representman's knowledge, namely show it, thus enabling an external operator to change the process and understand its results within the natural language.
