I've always thought of the Apple Watch as one of the friendliest and most helpful Apple devices, sitting on your wrist with a colorful watch face, telling the time, nudging you to get off your tush, gently tapping you (or not) with text alerts, and even sounding the alarm if it detects anything amiss with your heartbeat. But a new Siri AI feature, announced earlier this week during Apple's fall hardware event, could land unsuspecting Apple Watch users who enable the option into the middle of a heated AI privacy debate, according to several experts I spoke with.

Apple needs to learn to take risks again. Steve Jobs used the catchphrase to introduce the original iPhone in 2007. In his 15 years running the company, Tim Cook deployed it only a handful of times, including before his 2014 announcement of the Apple Watch. Today, nine days into his tenure as Apple's CEO, John Ternus said the magic words. Apple's next big invention, the company revealed at a launch event in Cupertino, is a $2,000 iPhone that sports--get ready--a "remarkable hinge." This is the iPhone Duo, a foldable gadget that opens like a book to reveal a capacious 7.6-inch screen.

The company's September event introduced Apple's first ever foldable iPhone, along with new iPhone 18 Pro models, updates to the Apple Watch, some AirPods, and more advances to Siri AI. The company is turning over leadership for the first time in 15 years, with former CEO Tim Cook handing off the reins last week to the new CEO, former Apple VP of hardware John Ternus. At the first Apple product soiree hosted by Ternus, the company made an even bigger change: it announced its first ever folding device, the iPhone Duo . The company also announced its new line of iPhone 18 Pro phones, some updates to its Apple Watch line, new AirPods, and new software capabilities powered by Siri AI. As expected, there were no base-model iPhone 18 announcements; those are likely coming early next year.

The new Apple Watch includes several "intelligent" listening features that have privacy and security baked in. But the protections can't change the facts of what the tools do. The new Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 come not just with better fitness tracking and upgraded noise reduction, but a whole new way to listen. Apple announced on Wednesday that the two smartwatches come with four opt-in "audio intelligence" tools that are powered by audio gathered by the watches' microphones. They include sound and music recognition, a conversation recap feature, and "Live Rewind" so a user can see a transcription of anything that was said in their environment in the previous 15 seconds.
